Role in The Middle

Role in The Middle

A thorough look at the aims and objectives of the Drama exercise, “Role-in-the-Middle”, with guidelines, examples and rationale for experienced and inexperienced drama teachers alike. The aims are to collaborate and create a new character, or flesh out an existing character. To discover or invent the rules which lead to high quality work. A character building game, where one student, or empty chair, takes the centre, representing a blank character. Around them, other students take turns to make contributions, developing the character and filling in the blanks.

Improvisation task based on Beatles' song lyrics

Improvisation task based on Beatles' song lyrics

Suitable for KS2 and KS3 this drama resource is good for small groups getting to grips with the lyrics of classic Beatles’ song lyrics. Many of them tell stories which can be acted out and elaborated upon. Eg Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, Obla di obla da, Penny Lane, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, A Day in the Life, Eleanor Rigby, Being for the benefit of Mr Kite, Yellow Submarine, Octopus’ Garden, etc. I used this idea with a group of adults with learning disabilities and there was so much scope for characterisation and improvisation. This could be done over several sessions. Ours culminated in a Beatles’ Day with performances before an invited audience. The resource itself is a worksheet that can be given to each group to fill in once they have chosen which song lyric is going to be their starting point for an improvisation.

Film Making Wordsearch Sheet Starter Activity Keywords Cover Drama Theatre

Film Making Wordsearch Sheet Starter Activity Keywords Cover Drama Theatre

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet of keywords on the theme of ‘Film Making’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

The Sound Stealer - poem by Josie Whitehead - KS1 and KS2

The Sound Stealer - poem by Josie Whitehead - KS1 and KS2

This poem is great fun, and an excellent performance poem for your class to perform, if only a verse each. It draws the attention of children to the words which we use to describe sounds. It could also encourage them to discover many new words that we use. Perhaps a suggestion would be to put a copy of this poem on the classroom notice board and get each of the children to bring in the name of a sound that they may have heard during the week - and get them to bring in some unusual names if possible. 1 Voice recording by myself, the author of this poem, because I recommend that children do a lot of listening to poetry well before they ever read or try to write poems themselves. (Well I did and in my old age I’ve written 1,350 poems, if not more.) You might be producing future children’s poets!! 2 PDF of poem to display on your classroom screen. 3 Word document with permission from myself, copyright holder, for you to print off for use in your class. This poem is written in iambic heptameter, ie 4 iambic feet on one line and 3 on next (ie 7 over 2 lines), with rhyming: abab I’m enclosing a simple explanation. For KS2 they should be able to write a few simple sentences in iambic feet, eg: My puppy barks for all its worth I love to come to school each day My teacher’s loved by all of us My Mum bought us an Easter egg etc

'Dracula's Castle' Year 7/8 play.

'Dracula's Castle' Year 7/8 play.

This is a play aimed at Ks3 pupils (but could be younger or older). I do this play in one term and either do it as a whole class performance, or have two smaller groups. The Powerpoints have embedded sound effects, and activities on making characters. Learning Objectives, can range from, how to behave when coming on and off stage, knowing entrances and exits, working on accents and characterisations, line learning and taking part in a ‘whole play’, rather than just a scripted exerpt. It is also good for physicalisation as some classes, ‘become the bus’ while others create the bus with chairs but then use their bodies to create the motion of the bus. There are characters with few lines and characters with more lines, to ensure that the lesso is differentiated and there is the opportunity to have a ‘technical’ student to do the sound effects and any music.
