WHOLE LESSON: EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

WHOLE LESSON: EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

This is a whole lesson on creating a fraction equivalent to a given fraction. The lesson starter is 10 general questions on grade 1/2 mathematics. The lesson powerpoint takes students through the concept of how a fraction can be "disguised" so that it looks completely different but yet has the same value. The differentiated resource allows students to write their answers on it. There is also a code breaker which will challenge students.

WHOLE LESSON: ONE AS A FRACTION OF ANOTHER

WHOLE LESSON: ONE AS A FRACTION OF ANOTHER

Complete lesson on the concept of writing one quantity as a fraction of another. For example, in a room of 20 students, 8 of them wear glasses: write the glasses wearers as a fraction of the room. There is a starter which can be used in your other lessons as it is 10 questions of a general GCSE grade 3 level. The powerpoint takes the students through the procedure and then there is a differentiated resource which students can write on. There is also extension material which require more thinking about the selection of the numbers. There is also a matching puzzle with the questions in the top half and the answers in the bottom.

These puzzles suit a range of classes and groups in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, depending on ability. Different puzzles from this pack could be used within the same class to provide differentiation. Puzzles 1 and 2: Equivalent Fractions Puzzle 3: Fractions in Simplest Form / Simplifying Fractions Puzzle 4: Fractions of Quantities (Unit Fractions) Puzzle 5: Fractions of Quantities (Harder) Puzzle 6: Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions An engaging alternative to worksheets, these make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs or groups. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing the work. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a fraction / calculation and a letter. Pupils circle any boxes containing incorrect answers or errors such as non-equivalent fractions (depending on which puzzle it is). Then they assemble letters from the remaining boxes to reveal a maths word. There's a further question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the word. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. Thank you for your interest in my resources.
