Exploring Stereotyped Bodies - Addressing gender stereotypes from primary to adult age range

Exploring Stereotyped Bodies - Addressing gender stereotypes from primary to adult age range

This activity explores how gender stereotypes are created and maintained. It is suitable for primary to adults (Have trialled it with all) as differentiation is by outcome. The basic premise is to draw and write all the stereotypes of boys/men in one body and all the stereotypes of girls/women in another body. Then list where the messages come from about how the two bodies should be down the centre between the two bodies. Draw arrows to show the pressure on the bodies. around the outside of the bodies we also list the names or situations that can occur for bodies that do not follow the rules. The question is posed “what is the easiest thing for bodies to do- if to step outside their stereotyped body leads to abuse”. The answer is of course remain in our stereotyped bodies- reinforcing them for ourselves and everyone around us. Discussion then explores how we can create spaces for us all to challenge stereotypes and live free from the constraints of stereotypes.

They Walk Amongst Us

They Walk Amongst Us

After the horrific events in Parkland Florida I am encouraging everyone to download this FREE resource that explains why we have to take a tougher stance when disciplining children and stop soft peddling when it comes down to consequences. Political correctness needs to be looked at closely in relationship to students and adults who because of their digital footprint have proven that they are a danger to society.

Getting digital natives to read and write: A guide for teachers

Getting digital natives to read and write: A guide for teachers

PDF version of my book: 'Getting digital natives to read and write: A guide for teachers'. Young people today are known as digital natives. Constant exposure to digital technologies is changing the way that they think, learn and relate to others. Digital technologies mean we do, in fact, engage with the written word more than ever before, but literacy can lack relevance in young people's lives. This book explores the links between digital technologies and acquiring literacy skills. Aimed at teachers across curriculum areas and age ranges, this book offers practical strategies for supporting students to become effective readers and writers in the digital age. You will learn how young people are devleoping literacy skills, how you can support them, and how to ensure that new technologies are a help rather than a hinderance. From how to help younger children develop pre-reading skills, to how to help teenagers with the literacy skills needed for secondary school and beyond, this guide provides clear advice and is a must-read for anybody supporting young people in schools. Chapters include: Who are digital natives? Digital technologies and literacy. Pre-reading skills. Vocabulary. Becoming a skilled reader. Reading skills in older children and teenagers. Handwriting. Spelling, punctuation and grammar. Writing across the curriculum. Supporting students with SEND. Digital literacy. Author Victoria Honeybourne has a background in special educational needs teaching. She has written a number of education books. This is a PDF version of the book. It is also available in paperback and as an e-book for Kindle devices from Amaon and other online retailers.

White Noise

White Noise

Sometimes teachers can go so overboard with praise with everything just being awesome that students begin to hear nothing but white noise.
