KS3/text level French Reading arrow-whole lesson introduction to reading strategies

KS3/text level French Reading arrow-whole lesson introduction to reading strategies

This tried and tested approach to reading provides a visual strategy which can be applied to a wide variety of texts in a second language or in English, improving not only language skills, but also general literacy. Particularly useful when exploiting authentic materials, it can equally be applied to more traditional texts and, once embedded, enables students of all ages to work successfully with more complex source materials than would otherwise have been the case. This resource models the strategy with a simple French text, however it can be applied to texts of a wide range of difficulty. It includes a ten slide teaching presentation to introduce the strategy, comprehensive teaching notes accompanied by thumbnails of all the materials, plus student sheets and the strategy arrow, which can be laminated for repeated use. The resource is also available modelled with a German text and with a Spanish text.

Midi 20, Grand Corps Malade - Practising understanding the time with a song.

Midi 20, Grand Corps Malade - Practising understanding the time with a song.

I created this resource for my Year 12 ab initio class, after we learnt to tell the time in French. The purpose of this activity is to get students used to recognising simple sentences/words in a text spoken at normal speed, as well as revising key vocabulary linked to activities and daily life. The video clip also helps students associate words with visuals. At the end, there is a creative activity aimed at getting students to use the time in French, as well as what they learnt in the song, to produce a piece of creative writing. Grand Corps Malade is a famous French slammer (slam is spoken poetry with music) and his diction is very clear, making his songs ideal to work on with students. My students really loved this song and went on to downloading it for themselves later on. It could also be used with a GCSE/MYP group.

L'amitié à travers les chansons

L'amitié à travers les chansons

This worksheet looks at 2 very different songs, both on the topic of Friendship: Les copains d'abord (Georges Brassens) and L'Itinéraire (Bénabar). It is an excellent opportunity to develop the use of French slang (argot) and colloquialism, while looking at two different approaches to the concept of friendship. The first song may require some level of explanation as there are many cultural references that can be quite obscure to students but it is an absolute classic. Originally created for my year 12 French B Standard and Higher Level class, but can be adapted to AS/A levels, possibly even advanced (I)GCSE. I have included a suggested markscheme for the questions at the end of the document.

Une "marelle" pour accompagner Le Gruffalo

Une "marelle" pour accompagner Le Gruffalo

Il y a huit phrases au sujet du court-métrage, Le Gruffalo, cachées dans cette marelle. There are eight sentences and a secret message hidden in this hopscotch game about the animated short, Le Gruffalo. Le début de chaque phrase est signalé par un petit numéro qui indique le nombre de cases dans la phrase. Toutes les cases qui forment une phrase se touchent. C’est la logique qui détermine l’ordre à suivre. A number indicates both the beginning of a sentence and the number of squares that comprise that sentence. All the squares in a sentence must touch each other. Careful reading will allow your students to find their way to the logical conclusion of each sentence. If your school does not yet own a copy of Julia Donaldson’s brilliant book or the animated short film in French, I've attached links to the three clips available online, a copy of my HIgh-Interest-Easy-Vocabulary adaptation of the story in script format and a link to a site that sells the award-winning dvd based on Ms. Donaldson's classic.
