Spanish exercises on expressions of opinion and justification. Some opinion work in the past tense. I have used this with students in their first year of Spanish, and it normally takes around 4 lessons. Equally usable with students in years 8 - 9. A nice end of year activity or to use around Halloween.

GCSE Spanish - SMSC / Cultural -El Carnaval - Photo Card (AQA)

This is the lesson that I have prepared for my higher y8/ and y9/y10 in relation to the topic of Spanish culture (Festivals & Celebrations) and is mostly related to El Carnaval. I used it as a general topic to look at the photo card task (speaking / foundation writing). The starter focus is reading - students complete differentiated tasks in relation to an authentic extract from on line newspaper. Students will then learn new / revise already known vocabulary on the topic of carnivals/ festivals using Quizlet and Quizlet live tools. Then they recap on the success criteria for Speaking Q2 / Writing Q1 - Photo card- and complete a photo card task based on a photo of a carnival celebration together. They jot their thoughts first, play a catchphrase game and then prepare their responses in pairs on the second photo card. Finally they complete a third photo card task individually and self / peer assess the same. In-between the photo cards I inserted some verb games to make the lesson more fun for the students and not to let them get bored. Let me know what you think!

This is a template that I prepared for my higher year 8 Spanish students and early KS4 in relation to answering a Writing Foundation Question 1 (photo card). Please note that this is a template and can be reused for different topics. This one is related to the topic of carnivals and celebrations. It starts with a Quizlet slide to revise (whilst being engaged!) some vocabulary prior to looking at the task. There are various Quizlet word lists available so you can just change the QR code and link if another list of words is needed. Then Students together with the teacher discuss the strategies and look at the success criteria and marking scheme. Then they play few verb conjugation games to revise some useful verbs that they can use to describe the photo card later on in the lesson. Consequently they jot their thoughts on a different photo card (working in pairs / groups) and play a catchphrase game to get more ideas on the topic. Then they work in pairs to prepare a response to another (but similar!) photo card. Finally they do it individually and self/peer -assess their work. The original layout was 20 minutes a day for 40 days. Mine is, due to my timing, 20 minutes a day of Spanish for 20 days. How yo use: When scanning the QR Code printed on the handout, your students will be able to find all the tasks, day by day. Topic of conversation: Fiestas Part 1: Photo description & comparison Encourages use of linking terms, connectors and cohesive devices Vocabulary acquisition Part 2: Discussion questions Debates Agree / disagree Advantages / disadvantages Encourages fluency and confidence using English Can be used for a 1-1 speaking class or pair-work activity in a large class Instructions for PART 1: 1) Working with a partner with the same photo (student As with As, Bs with Bs), students attempt to identify the vocabulary in their photo. (alternatively, for low-level students, the teacher can provide students with a vocabulary list and the students label the photo). 2) Change pairs to AB. 3) Student A describes photo while student B listens attentively. 4) Student B describes photo while student A listens attentively. 5) Still without looking at each other’s photos, students attempt to identify 3 differences between their photos. Students may now look at each other’s photos and describe 2-3 differences each. Encourage use of CONNECTORS: En primer lugar, En segundo lugar, Finalmente Sin embargo, Por otra parte, Mientras que Además, También, Es más Instructions for PART 2 1) Students ask each other the discussion questions. Encourage students to: Extend their answers Elicit more information Agree / disagree with their partners Justify their arguments 2) Students try and report to their new partner everything they can remember which their old partner has just told them.
