Digital Markbook for AQA Science

Digital Markbook for AQA Science

I have created and have been using for a number of years this digital markbook. Every teacher in my department use this on a lesson by lesson basis for KS4 and topic by topic basis for KS3; we use these in relation to the personal learning checklists (another of my uploads). This way of tracking progress has been invaluable in guiding the revision of my students, focusing them on the specific areas for their development. It is a simple process of entering R, A or G based on whatever criterion you decide works best for you

KS2 - KS4 Science Progress Map

KS2 - KS4 Science Progress Map

Adapted Science progress map includes all units from KS2 - KS4 and how they link together. Broken down by topic and subsection. Very useful to create a simpler progress map, making sure everything is included. Shows progressions from KS2 to KS4 - very helpful.

KS4 Organic reactions - carboxylic acids & esters (teacher powerpoint & student worksheets).

KS4 Organic reactions - carboxylic acids & esters (teacher powerpoint & student worksheets).

KS4 Organic reactions - carboxylic acids & esters (teacher powerpoint & student worksheets). - Starter activity provides an opportunity to do a quick assessed quiz on naming of organic molecules met so far. - Teacher powerpoint introduces all new concepts: naming of carboxylic acids & their key reactions; production & uses of esters. - Teacher powerpoint also introduces the key concepts of acid strength as well as acid concentration using visual cues to enable clear explanation of these tricky new ideas. - Final slide in ppt can be printed for students (suggested size = A3) to provide independent activities on carboxylic acids & esters. It also includes opportunities for students to apply their understanding of acid strength in terms of the degree of hydrogen ion dissociation. - Separate pack of past paper questions on these topics is included. They can be used as an in-class activity if time allows, or set as a revision/HWK task. - Leveled learning outcomes all tied in to the grade 1-9 new science GCSE structure. Suitable for those GCSE groups following the new separate Chemistry specification.

KS4 Organic reactions - making alcohol (teacher powerpoint & student worksheets).

KS4 Organic reactions - making alcohol (teacher powerpoint & student worksheets). - Starter activity revisits previous learning on saturation, unsaturation & alcohols. - Teacher powerpoint introduces all new concepts regarding production of alcohol: fermentation of sugar by yeast & use of ethene as the starting material. It introduces ideas for evaluation of both methods from environmental, economic & social perspectives. - Student worksheet provides independent activities for students to apply their key learning. - Past paper question pack allows further opportunities, either in-class or as a HWK activity, to practice & extend the students application of key learning points. - Leveled learning outcomes all tied in to the grade 1-9 new science GCSE structure. Suitable for those GCSE groups following the new separate Chemistry specification.

Energy Output of Burning Different Fuels

Energy Output of Burning Different Fuels

Structured activity that involves determining the Energy Output of Burning Different Fuels. Try determining the energy output of burning different fuels and graphing the results. Check the range fuels used. I suggest using a range of fuels of an increasing number of carbon atoms - however this can be dangerous! You know your pupils – being careful is better than being sorry. Remember - Health and Safety is the responsibility of the teacher in charge of the activity. Consult with your laboratory technician and try the experiment before allowing the pupils to attempt the experiment. You know your pupils best. Free starter and plenary activities are provided. Extra sheets of pupil write on sheets are provided. Activity is structured allowing projection of sheets onto Interactive White Board to allow collation of class results and class discussion. A suggested marking schedule is also provided , along with Grading and Feedback Sheets. I would suggest putting the pupils into 'marking pairs' and letting them grade each others work and give feedback. Then cast an eye over the work to check it has been done correctly. This activity teaches the pupils how to interpret a marking matrix and make judgements as to what is required to achieve each grade. It takes patience giving the pupils practice carrying out his activity, but will ultimately result in higher pupil achievement and easier marking for you.

Determining the Energy Content of Methanol

Determining the Energy Content of Methanol

Structured activity that involves determining the Energy Content of Methanol. Try burning different amounts of methanol and graphing the results. Check range of amounts of methanol used. I suggest methanol – but ethanol works equally well. You know your pupils – but methanol tastes horrible and discourages attempts to drink it!
