This is a resource I created for a y11 class studying Hamlet as pre-reading for next year’s Literature unit on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. It’s quite open-ended and the activities can easily be differentiated by task and by outcome. The Learning Outcomes are quite broad. This is especially useful if you’re exploring the text and adapting to the class as you go along, as opposed to a specific exam focus. The students picked their own monologue extracts so the ones listed are just suggestions based on my class.

Fantasy Roleplaying (6-8 Hours)

Personally, I’m a big fan of role-playing games and miniature games so I decided to incorporate some of those elements into a unit of work I’ve done with my low-ability English group around Fantasy Fiction. This will allow students to create their own character and then go on their own adventure as a group working together to complete a quest and defeat stereotypical fantasy enemies. The story and enemies are lead and controlled by the class teacher, and this best works with smaller groups of around 4-6 students. The lessons focus on: Problem solving skills Addition & subtraction Dice probability Team-working skills Role-playing Setting description and visualization Creative writing If you are familiar with how Dungeons & Dragons works then this should all be very familiar with you. There is also a free campaigned provided which is already readily available for free elsewhere (ignore the statistics and number in it, I just used it purely for the story element), you are also free to write your own campaign. All you need to get your hands on are some 6 and 20-sided dice. There are also many places on the internet already where you can simulate this dice rolls. Enjoy, we had a right laugh doing this and then were really engaged!

But the writers said that it could be about anyone who has had their life cut short through fame. The same song was then re-written and played during the funeral of Princess Diana. This lesson uses drama to explore these same themes of how society glorifies fame and immortalises the famous. This is a perfect resource for Key Stage 3, to help students at this level understand and appreciate the themes of this complex ballad in a creative and accessible way.
