Cause & Effect Language Practice with linking words for IELTS / EAP students

Cause & Effect Language Practice with linking words for IELTS / EAP students

A very simple EAP activity for IELTS 5.0 + students to practice cause and effect language with appropriate linking words. This is to emphasise that showing a simple cause and its effect is not often enough alone to demonstrate how/why this noteworthy in an academic essay. These 'secondary' effects should then focus students on explaining points in greater detail.

Conjunction Junctions

Conjunction Junctions

This collection of eight activity sheets will take your child on an exciting journey of conjunction discovery. Using the idea of conjunctions joining words and sentences, each activity is themed around highways and road junctions. Your children have to join them correctly in order to move on to the next activity. The first activity explores what is and what isn’t an independent clause. From here, children have to put co-ordinating conjunctions between independent clauses before coming up with their own ideas. After this, the children take a jumbled set of words and have to re-arrange them into compound sentences. They also have to plot a route through a word grid. To finish the activities, the children take part in a test of what they’ve learned. By getting the answers correct, they reach their final destination. Our children loved this and it has really helped them develop their understanding of how to use FANBOYS. There is enough material for three or even four lessons, and flashcards and answers are also provided. The activities themselves contain tips (on road signs) to help the children develop their knowledge along the way. The activities can be displayed on a screen to be worked through as a class.

Syntax Wordsearch English Language Starter Settler Activity Homework Cover Lesson

Syntax Wordsearch English Language Starter Settler Activity Homework Cover Lesson

Wordsearch on the theme of 'Syntax'. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Year 6 SPAG 2016 sample papers - Questions and answers - all in single document!

Year 6 SPAG 2016 sample papers - Questions and answers - all in single document!

Why use this when the questions and answers are free online? Simply because I have taken the questions and *COMBINED* them with the answers, making the lesson a lot simpler to teach! I love to revise grammar. I don't like needing to constantly refer between the answers and the questions to get the most out of each lesson. I decided the simplest thing was to simply combine the question paper and the marking schemes into a single document. The idea is simple - you ask a question - the children then show their answers and then you check the answers as a class against the official marking scheme answers. This helps to keep revision fun and the lessons snappy.

Write multi-clause sentences; play 'Clauses, clauses, clauses' dice game; use conjunctions

Write multi-clause sentences; play 'Clauses, clauses, clauses' dice game; use conjunctions

Play this to develop children's understanding of clauses and to encourage children to vary the number of clauses they include within their sentences. I have tried so many approaches to teaching this, and I have had the most success with this one. Assessment focus I can understand the terms ‘clause’ and ‘conjunction’. I can write sentences with one or more clauses. I can write sentences with many clauses, without confusing the reader. Here you will find three versions of the engaging dice activity 'Clauses, clauses, clauses'. In its simplest form, children write one or two clause sentences, using a limited number of conjunctions. Other versions go up to six clauses - very tricky! I have also included an extra version (my favourite activity for teaching clauses, conjunctions and multi-clauses sentences) called 'Clauses, clauses clauses - scavenger hunt version'. This activity promotes lots of talk around word classes and building multi-clause sentences. I recommend playing this a few times across the school year, as these skills need revisiting many times to build confidence. I hope your class find these activities as useful as mine did. Good luck!
