Adverb comprehension

Adverb comprehension

Hi, I adapted a couple of stories 'Little Red Hen' and 'The Lost Teddy' from Twinkl to allow some of my children to show their understanding of adverbs. I will be using it with my Year 2 class, only mids-high. There are 2 stories with questions for each in the style of the SATs papers.

expanded noun phrases, science fiction writing, KS2, short burst, sci-fi

I couldn't find much out there on KS2 noun phrases. Lots of stuff for KS1, but I feel it still needs pushing in KS2. On top of that, I couldn't find any decent short texts for sci-fi writing... So here is a very exciting - but also brief - sci-fi text. Children have to expand the noun phrases. There are 6 suggested ways they can expand nouns and a detailed word bank to support them. The text could also be used as a model for writing - it would be easy to play with it create something entirely new. Worked for my class.

Descriptive writing and comparison with other essay types.

Descriptive writing and comparison with other essay types.

This lesson(s) is based around the Oxford AQA English exam (part B) -writing section. Essentially it is an introduction for students unfamiliar with the structure/content of an academic, narrative or descriptive essay. It could also be used as a revision/recap essay if you so wish. The first ppt's identify the compents of each essay type. I got the students to work in groups to identify what they thought the structure/content of each essay was. I would board their ideas then compare/discuss the responses with the points I included on my ppt's. I then gave the students a topic (fishing in a lake) and asked them to write a descriptive essay. This is slightly scaffolded ass you would want the students to broadly stay on topic for review reasons. First time writers would need help and possible feedback, and depending on your student level/ability you could get them to do this individually or in groups. Also it could take longer than 1 lesson; it could also be set as homework. The choice is entirely up to you. After they complete this task, exercise 2 is designed for class/group discussion as to the differences between descriptive and narrative essays in particular. I found this a very useful lesson for students who are making the transition to newer forms of essay writing.
