Adverbs: forms, types and use

Adverbs: forms, types and use

This set of multi-lesson materials contained in 22 ppts and 6 accompanying individual tasks (which can be set as classwork or homework), gives a useful and detailed introduction to adverbs for ESL students in the K10-K12 groups. The materials could also be adapted for other students/levels if necessary. The materials were initially designed with a focus on improving my students grammatical and sentence accuracy in their academic essays. I believe an unintended side-effect is the focus on accurate sentence structures through the correct placement of the adverb in a sentence. The ppts help clarify the role of adverbs and how they can be seen as conjunctions, prepositions etc. Also there are definitions and examples of different adverbs-modifiers, adverbials, etc. The ppts also cover the time, place, manner etc. of adverbs and their use. Finally, complete answer keys are provided for the 6 accompanying handouts/tasks. Organisation of materials: ppts 1-8 are an introduction and guide to adverbs ppt 9 answers to first handout ppts 10-17 looks at adverbs more in depth ppts 18-22 remaining answer keys to handouts 2-6 Handouts/ Task sheets: 1-Introduction to adverbs 2-Gap fill exercise 3-Adverb or Adjective? 4-Put adverb in right position 5 + 6: Two short texts (5 is simpler) that the students have to read and complete using accurate adverbs while maintaining the structure and context of the text. I hope you find these useful teaching materials- please leave comments or feedback on the materials. I would appreciate any constructive criticism that would help me improve future resource uploads.

Two Bingo Games based on Prefixes and Suffixes.

Two Bingo Games based on Prefixes and Suffixes.

Each game has a Master Copy that gives you the meanings of the affixes. These affixes are based predominantly on the Schwa sound or consonant or vowel digraphs. Each game has eight different bingo cards. Differentiate as required but it is best to elicit the affixes e.g. “Next is a prefix which means life or living things.” If you need to name the affix you could request a spelling or a word that incorporates the affix. This is a great resource to improve: reading, spelling, ambitious vocabulary; use of: parts of speech, prefixes and suffixes. Bingo as a ten minute plenary helps to revisit the set of affixes covered in the Literacy / Lexicology lesson. For more resources visit my website www.lexicologyforreading.co.uk

I do not call out the affixes, I elicit the name of the affix through a series of concept questions. Creative / Descriptive Writing Random Sentence Type Playing Cards

Creative / Descriptive Writing Random Sentence Type Playing Cards

Do you have students who shrug at inspiration and puff their cheeks at imagination? Use this great tool for slow writing to get them thinking about not just what to write, but how to write it. Currently with 54 different sentence types, print these back-to-back (flipping the page on the short edge), then guillotine the cards, eh voila! Shuffle the cards and get writing. Each card comes with an explanation and at least one example to help guide your students in their writing: Example: the chiasmus sentence A repetition (in reverse order) or words, phrases or ideas already expressed (balanced clauses reverse each other). Readers don’t need to write but writers do need to read. Never let a fool kiss you or a kiss fool you.

ESOL resources for adjectives. Word bank, presentations, word-searches.

Assorted resources for teaching and learning adjectives in English. Designed for ESOL, but equally useful for primary or secondary support. A word bank of the most common adjectives. We used this by cutting out the words, and matching opposites, or antonyms. A slide show of the same words, just for display, or for asking learners to provide synonyms and antonyms. Works well on an iPad for sharing in pairs. Plus another version of the same words with additional slides showing most common antonyms, as found in Roget’s Thesaurus. Finally a pair of rather big word searches. Please make smaller ones (easy to find software online) if these prove too big.
