English / Literacy Recount: Paddington at Christmas (M&S Advert 2017)

English / Literacy Recount: Paddington at Christmas (M&S Advert 2017)

I made this resource based on the 2017 Marks and Spencer Christmas advert. It features Paddington Bear, who confuses a burglar with Santa Claus. Enthusiastic as ever, Paddington insists on helping the man with his Christmas deliveries, to the dismay of the burglar, who sees his stolen presents being taken off him. Paddington takes his new friend to observe a little girl, Alice, opening her presents, unwittingly showing the burglar the true meaning of Christmas and making him a better person. It's got great graphics to draw in the viewer and a story arc that many children will love, having already enjoyed Paddington stories previously. I wanted to use this advert, not only because Christmas adverts continue to grow in quality and popularity, with children finding them very entertaining and engaging, but also to develop children's writing, focusing in this instant on dialogue and speech verbs. Included is a story plan for children to note their ideas and a Notebook presentation for teaching the lesson. This can easily be adapted to develop a different Literacy skill or to suit a particular year group. Enjoy! And also see other Literacy recount lessons inspired by Christmas adverts in my TES shop!

English / Literacy Recount - Moz the Monster (John Lewis Christmas Advert 2017)

English / Literacy Recount - Moz the Monster (John Lewis Christmas Advert 2017)

I made this resource based on the 2017 John Lewis Christmas advert. It is about a little boy who struggles to sleep at night, scared that in the dark, a monster lives under his bed. Eventually, the boy becomes friend with the monster, but it continues to affect his sleeping, leaving him tired during the day. For Christmas, he gets a special present to help him sleep well at night, content that his monster friend, Moz, will be sleeping too. It's got great graphics to draw in the viewer and a story arc that many children can relate to. I wanted to use this advert, not only because Christmas adverts continue to grow in quality and popularity, with children finding them very entertaining and engaging, but also to develop children's description, focusing in this instant on character emotions. 13/11/17 - UPDATE to include a direct link to the video in the presentation

Syntax Wordsearch English Language Starter Settler Activity Homework Cover Lesson

Syntax Wordsearch English Language Starter Settler Activity Homework Cover Lesson

Wordsearch on the theme of 'Syntax'. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Picture Prompts for Story, Interview and Diary Writing

Picture Prompts for Story, Interview and Diary Writing

This is a combination of two of my published Picture Prompts at a discount of 25%. Both of these are still available as individual products at the links below. Story Writing Prompts for Adventure Mystery and SciFi Date with a Monster Both sets consist of picture prompts with essay writing templates, and large image slides which can be laminated and used according to the teacher's wishes. All of these are PDF files. The 'Date with a Monster' resource contains a simple set of picture prompts using cartoon images of monsters for stimulating the imagination for the writing of diary entries and newspaper interviews. These are divided into 18 picture prompts of two different sets of materials for a 'Date with a Monster' diary writing, and an 'Interview with a Monster' reporting task. They can be adapted for most levels and an explanation of how they can be used in the classroom is included. The 'Story Writing Prompts for Adventure Horror Mystery and SciFi' can be used for ESL classes and would also be suitable for younger students and others that may require further practice in writing and making short stories that have a beginning, middle and conclusion. These are divided into four topic areas; adventure, mystery, horror and scifi. There are four of each type with or without prompts, so the teacher can decide which to use based on the needs of the individual student or class. A more detailed explanation can be found in my TES store on the respective pages of each resource. Please use the links at the beginning of this text to view both.
