Reading/Phonics Game - KS1

Reading/Phonics Game - KS1

Which words fit the topic? that’s the simple challenge here. Children have to read a selection of words to work out which apply to the given category (e.g. colours) and which ones don’t. There are 4 of these challenges, spread down the page, with colour variation for clarity and added fun. Able readers can complete these independently, linking or ticking relevant words with a pencil; less confident readers will need support (either one-to-one or group). Some words may be instantly recognisable, such as ‘red’ or ‘hot’, but others will need to be sounded out. Ideal for phonics learning and reading practice.

Phonics alien words practice

Phonics alien words practice

Reading a selection of alien words and using more difficult sounds to create own words to practise. The adult who assesses the child will need to make a note in the space provided of the sounds that they are struggling with. The child can then use those sounds with an adult or on their own to create their own alien words. I have used this with a complete sound chart on the back.

Editing passes

Editing passes

Editing passes to aid the process of editing writing. Each pass focuses on a different area of a child’s writing they can edit. I personally printed them off, laminated them and put them on a key ring. This is not my resource. It was shared with me and I am also sharing it at the request of others. I have loved using them and hopefully you find them useful too.

POWERPOINT OF COMMON EXCEPTION WORDS FLASHCARDS FOR YEAR 2

POWERPOINT OF COMMON EXCEPTION WORDS FLASHCARDS FOR YEAR 2

A fun PowerPoint version of flashcards of all the Year 2 Common Exception words. Each word is on its own slide, which has the ‘grow and turn’ entrance animation. There is a ‘shape’ transition between each word. The words are in alphabetical order, but this can be edited easily. The presentation can be used for a variety of activities, e.g. As conventional flashcards – display and say the words as a class, or make it more competitive by using a quiz format and give points for the first team to say or write each word correctly. Who can be the first to say or write the word before it fully appears? Four or five lines of children. Only the front child can answer. The first one to answer goes to the back of the line. First line to get back to the beginning wins. Who can be the first to say or write the full version of the word before it fully appears? Memory test: select a small number of slides and display them for a few seconds each. Who can remember all the words (verbally, in writing, correctly spelt etc.) Who can be the first to write a sentence with the displayed word in it – specify rules (e.g. more than 8 words; fewer than 8 words; at least one adjective; at least one conjunction etc. etc.)
