Number: Place Value and Introduction to Abacuses (+ lots of resources)

Number: Place Value and Introduction to Abacuses (+ lots of resources)

This is a lesson that I have thought about putting together for a long time, but as I don't tend to teach a lot of KS3 or younger anymore then it has been a long time doing. Place value is such a vital skill and cornerstone in Mathematics and it never ceases to amaze me how many pupils struggle with it as a concept even at KS4. This lesson combines lots of different activities and types of questions to help pupils improve their understanding of number and place value. It includes a link to a video and a look at Abacuses, which are extremely popular for mental mathematics in China, India and South East Asia. The worksheet is linked to Abacuses mainly as a way of improving understanding of place value and I have added some additional help sheets and handouts for supporting the less able pupils in the class. I often laminated these so pupils can use MWB pens to write directly on them and thus they are also bigger in size. This PPT has 19 slides, so plenty of material... oh plus importantly excellent teaching slides, learning objectives, key words, starter, plenary and ANSWERS. NOTE: Feel free to browse my shop for more excellent free and premium resources and as always please rate and feedback, thanks.

Printable Christmas Activity Rose Compass Plotting Directions Simple Grid Map

Printable Christmas Activity Rose Compass Plotting Directions Simple Grid Map

I created these sheets to give students practice plotting directions on a grid, using the four simple compass points. To add interest, I’ve used a Christmas theme and added letters to collect along the trail as a small language tasks. The students seem to enjoy this part of the task more than I expected. It becomes a challenge for your centres. I start by introducing the rose compass and having student cut and paste to make their own. There are 3 color sheets, that I usually print and laminate. I store them as an activity with copies of the cut and paste worksheets, as a center activity. Students plot the trail with a marker, these marks wipe off for reuse. The worksheets ask students to cut and match the pictures; sort the letters to make a word; sort the 3 words into a simple message and justify the pairing of pictures. However, I’ve also include black and white sheets if you wish students to have their own copy. Once the trail has ended, students sort out the letters they collected to make a word. The three words make a simple message. I added a thinking/language component for students to explain why the two pictures belong together. There’s no “right answer” for this, as long as their reasoning is logical.

Addie the Alien - Visual Aids for Math Language

This Ppt can be created into visual aid posters in order to support the literacy skills of students studying mathematics. These are awesome materials that children can use in the classroom to help them understand the language of math problems. The Addie the Alien is an Accelerated Learning Program that supports children absorb information quicker and retain it for longer. All the techniques have been carefully researched by neuroscientists, educational psychologists and educational experts from around the globe. Children’s brains are all unique and they absorb information differently. It is important not to just recognise how a child learns and use that technique, but to give the child a variety of methods and allow them to find their own way.

Ordinal Number (1st-10th) and Picture Memory

Ordinal Number (1st-10th) and Picture Memory

MORE THAN JUST A MEMORY GAME!! Though this was created as a memory game, its cards can be used for so many other fun and educational activities, games and study aides. Print these pages out double-sided. This will make the page containing a colorful design the cover, or top, of the cards. Laminate the printed sheets to make for more durable playing cards (printing with card stock can also help with durability). Cut the cards along the black line. Once cut, mix the cards up, lay them out, and take turns flipping cards over. Kids will be exercising their memory, learning, and having fun while doing so! :)

Number Sense activity with ruler.

Number Sense activity with ruler.

Number sense takes center stage in doing mathematics and is one of the main stumble blocks for students with dyscalculia. Being able to visualize and apply a number line is an important number sense activity. You can help your student to develop this ability using a ruler or a tape measure that shows the inches or centimeters on one side and is blank on the other side, as number line, and a few small indicator stickies. Helps building estimation and number line skills. Use K-2
