ANIMAL ODDITIES PART 2 - 3 ANIMALS OF THE GIANT RED SAND DUNES OF THE NAMIBIAN DESERT

Students are naturally interested in the unusual. This unit has a focus on three animals that have odd behaviours which make it possible for them to survive in the environment of the sand hills. Their survival methods permit them to cope with a region of high day temperatures and very low rainfalls. This unit can standalone and at junior levels can be used as a "look,see,discuss" level. At more senior levels it could support studies on locational geography/environment studies (Africa) or linked with ideas of sustainability. This unit can also be linked with other units with a focus on Namibia "Formation of the sand dunes; coastal wrecks along the Atlantic coastline". The water-catching beetle has a unique method of taking in moisture. The cold blooded sand-swimming lizard has a unique way of reducing the impact of temperature increases.
