Stage Types

Stage Types

This resource is a PowerPoint where on each slide is a stage type: thrust stage, end on stage, in the round and traverse stage. I have printed (A3) and laminated each slide to display in my dance studio. I refer to the stage types at KS3 when asking pupils to sit in the audience, ready for a class performance/assessment. “Year 7, take your places in the audience of a thrust stage.” This is also really useful to use as an aid for class management. At KS4, the display acts as a revision aid.

GCSE Dance Glossary

GCSE Dance Glossary

This resource is for teachers of GCSE dance. With the help of the online AQA glossary, I have created a excel document with 3 tabs: Choreography, Performance and Appreciation. I have printed and laminated each tab (A3) to use as posters in my dance studio. My dancers find these posters really helpful to refer to in class.

KS3 Dance Year 8 ‘Gumboot Dance’ New and Improved 6 lesson SOW and delivery PowerPoint

KS3 Dance Year 8 ‘Gumboot Dance’ New and Improved 6 lesson SOW and delivery PowerPoint

This ‘Gumboot Dance’ New and Improved 6 lesson SOW and delivery PowerPoint is for teachers teaching KS3 dance (ideally in year 8). This is a new and improved version of my previous ‘Gumboot Dance’ resource. With this resource comes much improved starter activities emphasising on dance skills and terminology, a fresh look PowerPoint, YouTube Clips and research tasks. Purpose: This SOW explores the History and evolution of South African Gumboot dance. Pupils will gain and develop basic dance appreciation skills through watching clips of Gumboot dancing and ‘“Gumboots” Through the eyes of Michael Moloi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yX1E-Zb-fY which will lead into discussions about the History of the style in relation to actions, space, dynamics and relationships. Props are introduced from lesson 4 and inspiration on how to use them is drawn from Stomp the Musical. Pupils will gain and develop basic performance and choreography skills through working as a whole class to perform set Gumboot rhythms using unison, repetition and action and reaction. Working in small groups, pupils are encouraged to be creative and are allocated time to experiment and improvise choreographic ideas with their groups resulting in a group performance of their Gumboot choreographies that include a prop. Pupils will have the opportunity to view each other’s work and provide feedback to improve their own and other’s work. This SOW also provides pupils with research homework tasks to promote independence and research skills needed at KS4. Includes: Detailed 6 lesson (60 min lessons) SOW with: aims, learning outcomes, time scale, resources, key words, level descriptors, lesson calendar, lesson objectives, starter activities (bell tasks), main activities, skills, assessment for learning, differentiation and homework. 6 lesson (60 min per lesson) delivery PowerPoint with: lesson objectives, starter (bell activities), main tasks, talking points, success criteria, YouTube clips, level descriptors etc.

KS3 Dance Year 8 ‘Objects as Stimulus’ 6 lesson SOW and delivery PowerPoint

KS3 Dance Year 8 ‘Objects as Stimulus’ 6 lesson SOW and delivery PowerPoint

This ‘Objects as Stimulus’ resource is an alternative resource to my previous ‘Artificial Things’ resource. The difference between the 2 resources is that ‘objects as Stimulus’ can be taught to pupils at KS3 who will progress to either GCSE or BTEC at KS4. Whereas my previous ‘Artificial Things’ resource was aimed at KS3 pupils who would progress to GCSE only. With this resource comes much improved starter activities emphasising on dance skills and terminology, a fresh look PowerPoint, a game that develops creativity within choreography tasks and a cover work exercise just in case you need to set cover in your absence. Purpose: This challenging SOW has been designed to encourage pupils to use their imagination and apply their creativity at the same time as developing their dance skills. Choreography skills are homed in on in this SOW, as pupils are given an object as a stimulus (the snow globe) and taught how to create motifs that can be later on developed to create a dance that is entertaining to watch. Later on in the SOW, pupils choose their own object as a stimulus to create and develop their own motifs into their own choreographies. Throughout the choreography tasks, dance appreciation is explored through questioning why pupil’s motifs relate to their object stimulus and what actions, space, dynamics and relationships they have used. Although choreography is the main focus of this SOW, performance skills are not forgotten. Performance skills are referenced and developed alongside choreography skills. Pupils will have the opportunity to view each other’s work and provide feedback to improve their own and other’s work. Includes: Detailed 6 lesson (60 min lessons) SOW with: aims, learning outcomes, time scale, resources, key words, level descriptors, lesson calendar, lesson objectives, starter activities (bell tasks), main activities, skills, assessment for learning, differentiation and homework. 6 lesson (60 min per lesson) delivery PowerPoint with: lesson objectives, starter (bell activities), main tasks, talking points, success criteria, games, level descriptors etc. 1 lesson cover work worksheet exercise.

As students learn the set phrase they could watch back their performance and complete the middle section of tick box reviews (created using the AQA description sheet and by watching the AQA videos in detail). This booklet is also excellent for showing progress because the middle column can be completed again (right side tick boxes) at a later date in order to show improvement. The booklet includes a break down for each count of eight with pictures and descriptions as well as a reflective page for each section. The final page can also act as evidence of teacher and peer assessment throughout the process.
