Math Mix-UPs

Math Mix-UPs

Math Mixups are a fun twist on Math Magic Squares. The numbers in the grey boxes are row and column totals. However, the numbers in the middle are all mixed up! Students need to rearrange the numbers so that the sums of the columns and rows equal the numbers in the grey boxes… with a few numbers to get them started. This is a great activity for filling that last 10 minutes of the day or for students who finish work early in class. Have fun!

Mental/Speed Arithmetic Worksheets

Mental/Speed Arithmetic Worksheets

I created these randomly generating speed/mental maths worksheets in Excel for my students to practise their skills in: All values are 0-12 times table values. Theme Park Challenge - Maths

Theme Park Challenge - Maths

A good “Final Week” style activity which can last over several sessions or be finished in an afternoon. On sale for this final week of the term. Enjoy the Summer! Everything included - just add dice! This is a roleplay experience for children, aimed at Years 4 and above. Using squared paper and the instructions contained within, children design their own Theme park, use dice to generate the number of visitors, and see how much they made. Added problems such as rides not working add variation to each of the five days. Each ride has its own excitement rating and this means that children need to build a balanced park to fit the tastes of everyone. The game guides children and yourself through each of the steps with clear examples given for each step too. Mathematically this requires HTO x O skills, as well as some basic area knowledge (understanding that a footprint of 3x3 for a ride would mean 3 squares by 3 squares, so 9 squares). Custom-made games to fit a theme can be commissioned on request - get in touch!

Ten Block Maths

Ten Block Maths

This is for children who are learning, or who struggle to add units that cross place value, eg 8 + 4 = 12, or 8 + 9 = 17. The first set of resources and activities involve finding the answers that match the sums you are given. The second set of resources and activities involve children completing the answers for themselves. I have been inspired to create this resource by the need to use 5 frames and 10 frames more. This is to help students think more flexibly about number, and my Ten Block Maths resource lends itself well to complement the use of manipulatives to decompose numbers to make blocks of 10 s and units. Enjoy!

Maths Problem How much does it cost to make a bacon sandwich?

Maths Problem How much does it cost to make a bacon sandwich?

A one lesson long maths problem devoted to answering this question. Differentiated to 4 levels and including a further extension. For the easiest it leads learners through the problems step by step. Moving to the most difficult where they will have to research the costs and work out how to calculate the cost independently. The extension task calls for students to present how and why their method works as well as consider how the problem changes if new ingredients are added. Because I work in a Special School we have access to a kitchen so I have been able to link this with life skills work on preparing food and to vocational learning about setting up and running a cafe. We have also been able to make sandwiches which has been very motivational. More problems like this to follow. A little tweaking may be needed for learners who don’t eat bacon.

Rearranging digits and adding & subtracting large numbers. Made for low ability Year 8 students.

This PP starts with some diagnostic questions to test student understanding. Then there is a question to test student understanding, followed by some questions involving adding and subtracting with large numbers. I have included some minimal variation questions that have zeros as digits to test student ability. Finally there is an exit card to check understanding. I have created this for low ability (bottom set) year 8 students.

Crime of the Century - Maths

Crime of the Century - Maths

A crime solving, code breaking activity. Revises multiplication, decimal multiplication, division, decimal addition/subtraction and using BIDMAS/BODMAS. Pupils answer 5 sets of questions, each on a different topic. The answers (in order) then become a code. Pupils then refer to the crime solving posters (I normally laminate them and set them around the room) To decode the item stolen, the location, the time of day, the motive and ultimately the criminal. Answers are included on the powerpoint, as is a problem solving starter. The powerpoint and the posters are easily adaptable to change the level of difficulty.

Working With Numbers

Working With Numbers

I was asked to help some students (Years 9 and 10) who massively lacked confidence with number, so I came up with this set of questions working through general calculations, calculations with brackets, powers, fractions, percentages and decimals. In each case the student must balance both sides of the equation; it is designed to encourage discussion and thinking rather than just running through a set of similar questions. I hope you find it useful.

Fast Foods - activity

Fast Foods - activity

I created this resource to raise my students’ awareness of fast foods and their contents. I used this resource in my maths lessons but it could be used for healthy eating, discussions, health and social care and many more. In my maths lessons, students learned the daily recommended allowances and how companies can confuse us with labels as well as writing maths questions at their differentiated levels. The students wrote different maths questions ranging from basic addition to complex percentages and averages. They were required to give feedback on each other’s questions too.
