Road Safety Week using PowerPoint + 31 Different Ways Of Using This Resource In The Classroom

You could look at it directly as a presentation and discuss the different aspects of road safety being shown in each of the photos. I have added a PowerPoint with 31 different ways you can use picture flashcards in the classroom. You could print off and laminate the photos to make an interesting, eye-catching display about Road Safety. The students could also take the laminated photos and sort them into different Road Safety Activities. The students can then discuss why they think each aspect of road safety is important. The photos could also be used as prompts for creative writing, factual writing or descriptive writing.

The lesson is suitable for all classes, from Nursery to Primary 7, with discussions modified according to the year taught. The school streets audit could be carried out by one class or year group. Alternatively, each class within the school could take a route from the school to involve the whole school in conducting an audit. There are a number of objectives relevant to carrying out the School Streets Audit: • To learn about road safety in a real-world context • To contribute evidence to a School Travel Plan • To identify areas where safety could be improved by infrastructure (speed bumps, double yellow lines, crossings, etc) in order to request such improvements from the Local Authority.
