8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

These 8 lively, colourful pictures offer inspiration for story-writing, poetry-crafting, newspaper report inventing, and enhancement of the topics they reflect, which include: wild woods, migrating birds, ocean, sunset, jungle, wild animals (British and tropical), dragons, magic carpet rides, transport, myths and more. NB: I sketched and coloured the pictures by hand, adjusting them slightly with basic computer software, so expect spontaneity rather than professional artwork or machine neatness. I use them for all primary classes.

Rocket and fuel hangman

Rocket and fuel hangman

Instructions for use: Cut out the rocket and fuel canisters. Use either sticky tack or velcro to fasten them onto the background. Use like hangman, so if you are playing a game, take away a fuel canister after a wrong answer. Will all the canisters be taken or will the rocket still be able to blast off?! At the end of the activity, if there are still canisters, take the rocket off the background and let it fly away!

Wild Woods at Twilight - Imagination Trigger

Woods are fascinating places, especially at twilight, when it starts to twitch with furtive activity and colours fade and blend mysteriously. Your children may spot an owl, a robin, a fox, a hedgehog, a rabbit and two squirrels amongst the moonlit branches of this wintry wood. The hand-drawn scene will inspire ideas and language for writing, also guiding artwork, promoting an appreciation of the natural world, celebrating leaf colour, illustrating the concepts of evening, night skies, autumn and winter, and providing discussion spurs for your class.

Copernicus - A sample chapter from 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'

Copernicus - A sample chapter from 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'

This is a sample chapter from the forthcoming book, ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ by Tom Burkard and Colin McKenzie. Copernicus was a pioneer of astronomy whose work was crucial to the replacement of the ‘goecentric model’ of the Universe with a ‘heliocentric’ model. This chapter is aimed at higher ability 11-16 students and has been found to be an excellent resource for revision, homework or ‘flipped learning’. Further chapters are also being made available for review and evaluation. This chapter tells the story of Copernicus’ life in the context of his times. It details his work on astronomy and describes the cultural implications of his discoveries. Explanations are provided that enable to understand how observations of planetary movements provide evidence for the different models of the solar system. Each chapter of SotSoG gives a brief biography of a great physicist and is linked to an explanation of their discoveries that is relevant to the school curriculum. This is a trial chapter and we welcome feedback from teachers and students before publication of the finished book. I have used chapters for revision, homework and as ‘flipped learning’ activities, where students are encouraged to independently learn the basics of a topic before it is taught in class. Our chapters are also very effective for use in ‘quiet reading’ sessions. The literacy level here is ‘middle to high’ and we have found this content to be very engaging as extension work for higher ability students.
