My Street - Story for students with learning difficulties. An all inclusive story.

I have outlined a couple of key features in the book. • I have given each character a name that starts with a different letter – student who sign can learn the signs for each character and recognise the letter for each. • I have numbered the houses from 1 to 10 giving students the opportunity to count, count out objects (maybe houses). • I have given each house a different colour so that students could be asked questions about colour of house. • I have given each character different colour clothes so that students can be asked about colour of clothes. • I have made the drawings simple and tried to make each character different – colour/style of hair etc so that students can comment on who that character is. • Each page contains a line/verse that has the same syllables/structure. I find students with special needs like the rhythm and structure of a book and can become engaged by this. I have found ‘Call and Response’ method of reading for students particularly engaging for vocal and non-vocal students. Read the line, then students (with staff) to read the same line. Sign each line which is good for non-vocal and vocal students also as they learn signs with repetition of each verse. • The book contains answer cards which I would like teachers/parents/guardians to cut out laminate and stick to answer laminate boards. Again very simple but give students the ability to comment on the following questions.  What is the colour of Luke’s house?  What colour is Hope’s clothes?  What number house does Max live in?  What does Tal like doing?  Who lives in house number 3?  Who likes playing football?  Use sentence strips to create short sentences ‘Tal lives in number 2’. ‘Tal likes to drum’. Students who are able to write can copy these sentences. • The concept of ‘he’ and ‘she’ can be difficult for some students and this can be discussed also ‘What does he like to do?’ etc. • Activities are so important for students with special needs and these characters are all doing activities that can be accessed by students during their lessons and using their experiences to engage and comment – experience activity, take photos include in literacy lessons etc.

My Meeting is a visual pupil voice resource to increase participation and engagement in meetings

This 24-page booklet is intended to prepare children and young people for meetings that they are invited to attend. This could be a termly or annual review, looked after child review or any meeting where the pupil’s voice is really valued (as recommended in the SEN code of practice). It is intentionally simple to accommodate a range of needs and ages. By preparing pupils well beforehand, they will better understand the purpose of these meetings, be more fully engaged in them and have a lasting record of the decisions made there. It is also hoped that the owners of this book will be encouraged to personalise the booklet by adding their own photo next to the box on the front cover alongside a drawing that they have coloured in. Some images to colour in are included along with drawings of people (if a photo is not available). Additionally, there are some bubble letters to use should they want to put their initials on the front cover. If not, those pages do not need to be included in their booklet. It is intended that appropriate text and photos will be added to each page in whatever way is most meaningful to the young person. A visual timetable and a ground rules prompt is also included to laminate and display prominently at the start of and throughout the meeting. The typeface of the booklet has been deliberately sized and coloured to be accessible to those with visual impairments and difficulties processing text.

There are also some integrated literacy skills to match the ingredients as well as a writing sheet. At my school, my students run a in-school cafe for staff and visitors and dips are also a favourite for our customers.

Where is deforestation happening (map showing where forests were, and what is left- students label named areas). How it happens (students cut and stick to show areas of deforestation caused by slash and burn or clear cutting). Impact on different areas (students match terms and descriptions). Reducing deforestation (students select from a choice, and are encouraged to come up with their own examples). Revision/ Test- contains a question from each area to check understanding and to revise the topic. Choice of answers for some questions, while others need a bullet point or sentence to be written (lower abilities may need a scribe for this). Label the 4 different layers of the Rainforest. Match the description with the correct photo and label. Lower abilities- cut out labels and stick in correct places. Middle abilities- cut out photos and stick. Copy labels. Higher abilities- cut out photos and stick. Write own labels. Includes an extension worksheet for students to write their own descriptions of the 4 layers of the rainforest and a mapping exercise for students to find where rainforests are located around the world and colour in on the map (map be best if printed on A3). Weather Use the chart to record the weather for 6 weeks in your local area, or use the 2nd chart to compare 2 places or countries. Includes 2 question worksheets for higher abilities, 1 being a recap and summary worksheet of their findings comparing 2 places/countries. For lower ability levels- includes pictures of sunshine, clouds, snow, rain, storm, fog, frost, rainbow, and wind to help with understanding. Allows them to observe the days weather and think about what the weather will be like next week. For higher ability levels- space to write the weather they can see and allows them to predict what they think the weather will be next week. Children could also take their own photos of the weather and stick them on the chart. A clip from BBC weather showing the latest weather forecast could be shown during the lesson, and children could be encouraged to look at different areas of the UK or another country to compare the weather in different regions. Use the 2 worksheets to compare understanding before carrying out the observations and after to check learning and understanding.

This resource is designed to help learners explore barriers to becoming more independent. The resource consists of case studies and a page of visual prompts to be considered as possible ways to break down barriers to independence. E.g. role playing an activity before doing it for real or using google images to plan a route to an unfamiliar place. Both effective ways to reduce anxiety levels. Learners are required to consider up to four basic cases studies and offer advice from the options provided.
