Lesson on Past Simple accompanied by the Lesson Plan. EAL support or EFL teaching

This is a whole lesson with the main focus on Past Simple. A text for reading comprehension practice followed by some work on vocabulary. Then Rules on Past Simple as well as Uses, Formation, Spelling and differentiation between regular and irregular verb, followed by a list of irregular verbs. After that, a few activities on Past Simple, for further consolidation. Finally, a writing activity, as an extension and further consolidation. This lesson has been created as EAL support for Intermediate Level learners (secondary education), but can also be used when teaching English as a Foreign Language.

This evaluation contains a short-answer section for 20 points (identify the characters and artwork) and a long-answer section for 40 points (23 questions). I also included a writing journal with a creative/opinion writing task. This section has its own evaluation grid. Students are asked to select one of the proposed artwork and to write an appreciation of the selected artwork.

80 slide Powerpoint presentation on ‘Literacy and Fashion’. It is comprised of the following sections: Opinions Students are prompted to respond to questions relating to style, taste, couture vs the high street, the ways in which celebrities may influence fashion, the longevity of certain trends, and the way in which people may be judged on their appearance. Students are also required to research the history of the modern fashion industry. This may be linked to History and Guidance department topics. Fabrics: natural and synthetic This cross curricular section may be useful alongside Chemistry / Biology studies. Fashion and sustainability This cross curricular section may be useful alongside Environmental Science studies. Ideas for alternatives to leather, fur are introduced, and students are then required to research these. Fashion Vocabulary A list of words and a paragraph with blanks to fill in are provided for each letter of the alphabet. Fashions from a variety of cultures are included. Multiple Choice Fashion Quiz and Crossword Fashion Critic Students must review a selection of outfits using a list of both positive and negative descriptions provided. Fashion Controversy Students are required to pick one of a selection of controversial fashion-related issues and write a short essay on the topic. Students are then prompted to analyse quotes by famous designers/photographers/TV characters and decide whether they agree with the ideas/advice provided. Colour Chaos Students are required to match up a list of more unusual colour names with coordinates on a colour grid. On trend Students match up names of trends with representative photos, and then pick a trend and create their own interpretation of it. This may be used alongside an Art and Design project. 7 page Assessment and Activities Booklet based on the Powerpoint also included.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory summer camp, worksheets, cooking and fun activities KS2 EFL TEFL

This was Day 1 of my Roald Dahl themed EFL summer camp. It includes art activities, games and cooking ideas based on the book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.The day followed this plan: Introduction 1. Introduce the story and characters 2. Students use the worksheet to draw themselves in the style of Quentin Blake and write about their favourite things. 3. Allocate students into teams and they introduce themselves to the rest of their team. Team Games 1. Chocolate relay Race - Students must run to unwrap the chocolate twix bar and then feed it to the next person in their team. 2. Balloon Popping Game - In teams students must throw the darts to try and pop the balloons. The team to pop the most wins points. 3. Golden Egg and Spoon Race - Students must race around the room, against the other team, whilst balancing an egg on a spoon. If they drop the egg they must restart and go again. The winning team wins points. 4. Design a candy -Introduce different ingredients (unscramble the letters for EFL) -Taste Test (students try to describe what they are eating whilst blindfolded) - Introduce Willy Wonka’s strange inventions. - In teams the students must think of a new type of chocolate bar/candy. -Students draw and describe their invention using the worksheet and make posters. - Teams present their invention to the rest of the class (my personal favourites were flying insect sweets and 'King Candy' that tasted like gold and made you feel like royalty for an hour... kids can be so imaginative!) -The most interesting new candy invention will win points. Art and Crafts 1. Clay Photo frames -Using coloured card, PVA glue, paints and clay students decorate their individual photo frames. 2. Photobooth Props - Students make props and costumes for the photobooth- including small hats, funny hairstyles, bowties, cut out candy bars and golden tickets on sticks that they can hold and pose with. A group photo is then chosen and printed to go in the frame as a fun reminder of the camp. Cooking 1. Willy Wonka Bread - Students spread butter or Nutella onto their sliced bread and decorate with sprinkles. These sandwiches can be cut into shapes and eaten.. - As they eat their sandwiches students can watch the movie with subtitles. - If they finish early or don’t want to watch the movie they can complete the wordsearch worksheet. 2. Chocolate fondue and fruit slices on sticks. 3. Wonka fudge and Oompa Loompa cheesecake pops- I found these online and have included images and links to the recipes in the ppt. 4. Augustus Gloop Chocolate Slime -Again found online. I did not have time to try this with my students but there is a link to the instructions. *Not edible!

Applying Visual Literacies in ESL Learning - Creating Stories about Place

This combined lesson and plan is designed forAdult Migrant and Intermediate ESL/EFL and ESOL learners who are ready to expand their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through imagining different places. The associated activity includes visual texts (images), a series of questions to guide classroom interactions, and vocabulary for elicitation toward developing effective speaking and writing skills. This is a semi-structured activity where students are encouraged to draw on their own experiences of different places. The activity moves the student from being a visual spectator to being a textual critic. By learning in an independent but guided way students can better prepare for the independent learning expectations of tertiary or workplace learning. This resource can be adapted for a particular curriculum or used in a stand alone session of 2-4 hours.

This resource is a collection of songs and games suitable for use at an ESL summer camp, or any summer camp. It consists of 5 pages of song words (some with actions) gleaned from the Internet and camp experience, as well as 7 pages of games instructions for indoor games (although many could be played outside as well). The objective of these activities is to get the children talking and using English in a fun way without being aware of doing so. Most of the songs and games could be used in an English-first-language environment very successfully.
