The Archaeology of Ancient Greece

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece

Introduction to the project and teaching resources Within this folder you will find a series of documents about Ancient Greece with a focus on daily life and houses. All of these materials are designed for cross-curricula teaching and cover the English, History, Maths, Science, Geography, and Art subjects of the National Curriculum. Please do not feel that you have to use all of these files and the associated activities, as they may not all be appropriate for your teaching or timetable. The materials include both background information to the subjects covered, and actual teaching materials, including various activities. These resources were conceived together with the intention of providing teachers with all of the information they would need to teach a topic on daily life in Ancient Greece. Thus some of the activities will require you, as the teacher, to have engaged with all of the background materials within your planning, even if you do not use them directly in your lessons. For example, presentation 20, which provides information and activities for the Science curriculum on Vision and Light, requires you to have read about Greek houses and the family, which is found in presentations 05, 07-10 and 14. All of the teaching activities have been designed to support the students’ core knowledge and skills as outlined in the National Curriculum. For example, presentation 01 covers the topic of archaeology as a discipline, including what Classical archaeologists study, and where they undertake their excavations. Within this presentation (01) there are two specific activities on slides 3-6. The Kmz* file (02) (for use in Google Earth), and Presentations 03 and 04, extend this topic into Maths and Geography activities that can be done both in and outside the classroom. These activities may be followed by presentation 05, which focuses on the settlement (Olynthus) that provides the basis of many of the other presentations about specific issues regarding houses, daily life and the family in Ancient Greece. Presentation 06 is a LEGO Education activity that is linked to presentations 01 and 05, and develops students’ work in the English, Art and Design subjects of the National Curriculum.

LAND RIGHTS ISSUES FOR THE MARRA ABORIGINAL PEOPLE

LAND RIGHTS ISSUES FOR THE MARRA ABORIGINAL PEOPLE

This unit has a focus on the Land Rights of the Marra Aboriginal people. After deliberations lasting almost two decades the Government of the Northern Territory Proclaimed the Limmen National Park and the adjacent Limmen Bight Marine Park. Interested parties were invited to have an input on what the Parks would allow and disallow. As traditional occupiers of the designated region the Marra people were keen to have an input. This interest heightened when the mining operation within the Park boundaries indicated a projected development in the form of a pipeline that would carry iron ore sludge from the mine across traditional Marra land; across the shallow waters of the Limmen Bight and onto Maria Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Maria Island was of particular interest to the Marra people. Consequently the Marra Aboriginal people prepared and forwarded Petition to the Northern Territory outlining their objections to the proposed pipeline. This unit is about what happened. It is about land rights of the Marra who, through generations, had been impacted by European presnce on the lands they regarded as their traditional lands. Students can gain some insight into the Marra respect for land and the need to protect its resources. The Petition is provided for screen use and is also contained in the attachments. Tke your students into the remote region of the Limmen National Park and the shallows seas of the Limmen Bight Marine Park. Have them consider the thinking behind the final Proclamation of the Parks which are shown in the map. There are other units on this area if you wish to broaden the study.

All About Me Back to School Pop Art Box & Task Cards

This ‘Pop Art Box About Me’ art and getting to know you resource, is a fun, first week back to school ice breaker for both girls and boys. It is a really creative way for teachers and students to learn more about each other. Invite students to create a unique ‘All About Me Box’, following the template prompts using Pop Art style doodles and words. Box prompts include: Age, name, grade, self portrait, favorite colors, favorite fruit, my top goal, I love… Students can then fill their boxes with a selection of question cards and work in pairs or small groups to explore their learning goals, aspirations, likes and dislikes. 36 question cards are included, along with blanks for students to have some fun and invent their own questions and games, for example, ‘Would you rather…’ Another task is to make a ‘card to myself’ with a message or goal, or a kind note for a friend. For example, students can give these to their teacher to open at the end of the year. The coloured, finished example included features a girl’s face. However the actual face template has a ‘generic bald head’ so both boys and girls can create a self portrait from this outline. Classroom Decor includes Pop Art inspired garlands and posters to colour and display. There are doodle pages to keep early finishers occupied. UK/Aus/Can spelling options of favourite and colour are included in the templates. Boxes measure 2.6 x 2.6 x 2.6 inches / 6.6 x 6.6 x 6.6cm when finished. The entire box template is designed to fit one sheet of US Letter or A4 sized paper. A larger box template is also included if you have access to an 11x14 or A3 printer. Magic Carpet Ride - display picture, hand-drawn

Magic Carpet Ride - display picture, hand-drawn

This serene scene will appeal to your children’s imagination, as they put themselves in the place of the happily gliding children. With the ocean, palm trees and setting sun below, and the soft, clear sky around them, this fantastical image will inspire your class to write, draw, discuss or enact the concepts conveyed. It could be used in combination with my magic mat poetry-writing sheet, for instance, available in my shop here. It will also brighten up a dark corner, of course!
