Our School Sounds - fun writing sheet for Ys 2-4: onomatopoeias

Our School Sounds - fun writing sheet for Ys 2-4: onomatopoeias

Schools are noisy places, and noises are fun to sound out and make up words for, as children will find here. Do their shoes go CLUMP CLATTER, CLICK CLACK or SHUFFLE, for instance? And how about all those dinner hall sounds? This sheet combines Creative Writing opportunities and all-round Literacy with a focus on school, helping children identify with it and develop their sense of belonging. An excellent end-of-term activity, gap-filler, writing prompt or onomatopoeia teaching aid.

GCSE Citizenship 9-1 Active Citizenship Campaign Ideas

GCSE Citizenship 9-1 Active Citizenship Campaign Ideas

Not sure how to plan the 15% active citizenship element of the GCSE course? This document will provide you with a variety of campaign ideas and areas for students to research. All ideas are topical and meet the exam boards’ criteria. This document contains exam board specific (AQA, EDEXCEL and OCR) guidance and student checklists to ensure you can arrange opportunities for students to make the most of their campaign. Examples of campaigns in action are also provided. Note: the OCR exam board provides the biggest remit for campaigning. The other two exam boards (AQA and EDEXCEL) are more prescriptive in what campaigns they like to see with a focus on local and national and less on international reach. If in doubt, always contact the exam board. Good luck! Like us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter

A guide for using the Earth Charter in Education

A guide for using the Earth Charter in Education

The Earth Charter is the product of a worldwide, decade long, cross cultural dialogue on common goals and shared values. It was drafted by a civil society initiative and launched in 2000. The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace. This Guide is intended for all educators who are concerned to develop educational systems and programs that prepare young people and adults to live sustainably and become responsible local and global citizens in the 21st century. It provides basic information on how to use the Earth Charter in educational settings. It will be especially helpful to educators who are working in the fields of environmental education, education for sustainable development, human rights education, human ecology education, peace education, humane education, social education and allied areas. The Earth Charter can also be used to assess and reconstruct the entire curriculum and management practices of an educational institution in an effort to ensure that the institution is doing everything it can to prepare students to meet the great challenges of our time.

The Brick: Going Too Fast to Care - An assembly for Primary schools

This Assembly from Mirror Assemblies is one of their series for Changes (SEAL Theme) and looks how one incident can make someone who is very busy, change their view. It considers whether the action used for drawing attention in this story is effective or if there might have been other options. The children are encouraged to think about times when they have been too busy to see how others might need their help or care. IMPORTANT The license for using this assembly in your own class is £3, but if you wish to use this resource for a whole school assembly you will need to purchase the school license. If you like this assembly and are looking for others for throughout the school year, you will find it more economical to purchase themes from Mirrorassemblies.co.uk where your school can subscribe to any number of themes for periods from one term to 5 years. This will allow you access to all new assembly materials added to that theme or those themes instantly. End of Term "News and General Knowledge Quiz" (January - June 2018)

End of Term "News and General Knowledge Quiz" (January - June 2018)

Sport - Music - Films - Places - History - Comics - Characters - Games etc. This is huge and this is going to be fun! Teachers, are you at a loss as to what to do in the final days leading up to the end of term and the onset of the summer break? Look no further, this is a quiz your class will enjoy. Tried and tested on Year 5 through to Year 8. Quite suitable for older students … and staff. Fun end-of-term quiz testing both general knowledge and events in the news from January to June 2018 This news/general knowledge quiz can be enjoyed by competing as an individual or in teams. Let’s keep it simple – get yourselves a sheet of paper for your answers and grab a pen or pencil. All your teacher needs to do is either go through all of the questions chronologically or alternatively each person/group can choose a month and a number from 1 – 21. All participants / groups must then answer the question that appears once the selected button has been clicked. A ‘back’ takes you back to the question selection page. Some of the questions involve only one answer needed whilst much of this quiz involves multiple questions. Your teacher will give you time to discuss and then to write down your answer if working in teams. You can even stretch the Quiz over a few days. The answers to all of the questions can be downloaded from the TES website. There will be a full year quiz available towards the end of 2018 with loads more interesting and challenging questions!

Assembly FaceTime A Farmer

Assembly FaceTime A Farmer

A fantastic classroom and whole school assembly resource idea. We have been Face-timing a local farmer within whole school assemblies. The children have seen fields and how and why they are sprayed. They have seen inside the farmer’s tractor and driven around. This week they met some piglets, cows, chickens and ducks. A great way to engage children. Plus they love the fact that it is live and that they can ask questions there and then. Links to IT, Geography, Science and much more… Would highly recommend.

PSHE lesson plan- words can hurt

PSHE lesson plan- words can hurt

This is a tried and tested lesson plan for KS2 (but can also work for KS1) about how unkind words can have a lasting effect. At first reading it seems a little cheesy but I’ve used it with some pretty streetwise Y6 pupils and they loved it! The focus is on empathy and understanding the lasting damage a throwaway phrase or action ccan have on people. Hope you and your pupils enjoy the lesson and if they do why not let others know by leaving a review? If you need any further support with PSHE planning and teaching you might like my new book Making PSHE Matter- available from Jessica Kingsley Publishing and Amazon. http://www.jkp.com/uk/making-pshe-matter-2.html

World Ocean Day - Zero Plastic Lunch for 8th June

This assembly is aimed at 5-9 age range but could be used throughout the primary School Age range. It briefly considers world plastic pollution and then goes on to look at the impact of every day single use plastics on the world. It encourages pupils, adults and schools to take small steps to “make a difference”. Mirror Assemblies also provide ready-made assemblies including scripts presentations and linked music in the form of a presentation which encourages thought and reflection as a warm-up for the main part of the assembly.
