The United Nations

The United Nations

After the atrocities of the Second World War (millions of Jews were killed and many others) some countries got together and decided that something like that could not happen again. They formed the United Nations. The United Nations drew up a list of basic Human Rights (1948) that everyone should be entitled to – this is called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These worksheets help the students to discuss what they consider essential to living and compare their thoughts to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In addition they look in detail at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and discuss whose responsibility it is to uphold these

Manchester Arena Assembly (demonstrating the power of the human spirit)

Manchester Arena Assembly (demonstrating the power of the human spirit)

This assembly, written for a year 4 class production, inspires people to see the good in humanity and demonstrates the power of the human spirit, even in times of sadness and tragedy. First, the events of the Ariana Grande concert on 22nd May are briefly presented. Then, the assembly goes on to give examples of all the wonderful people who did things to help those in need. Finally, an emotional and heartfelt song is sung and the assembly ends with an uplifting message of how we are safe, we can come through terrible times and we can spread good in the world. The pack includes a script (with invisible text boxes on the Word document that you can write inside to allocate lines to children if needed), a PowerPoint presentation of pictures of examples of people who helped (which are referred to in the script) and a video of the song written in honour of the tragedy (which includes my interpretation of the words because I couldn't find the official lyrics anywhere). I hope this inspires people to be proud of the way humanity can come together during times of adversity.

The Send My Friend to School campaign is a UK based schools-action which brings together thousands of schools across the country to campaign for the right to education. The 2017 campaign is focused on education financing: World leaders have promised every child in the world a quality education but a key piece of the puzzle is not in place – the money to pay for this education – leaving the global picture with 263 million children missing out on school, and many of those in school are not learning. The Send My Friend to School campaign acts to turn the tide of the education crisis. Download our Primary Teacher Pack now with everything you need to bring the campaign to life in your classroom, including case studies, activity sheets, videos and more.
