More Emotive Language

More Emotive Language

Due to the popularity of the Emotive Language Powerpoint in which students create emotive newspaper headlines, this stand- alone or follow-up Powerpoint looks at other forms of emotive language. Firstly students identify the emotive words form the neutral words, then they rank sets of words in terms of their emotive power. Next they identify the emotive language in two real texts - an extract from a Winston Churchill speech and an extract from an Animal Aid leaflet. They are then supported to use emotive language by re-writing a text on smoking. Emotive images are introduced with three real images from charity leaflets which create discussion on their use/effect. Example answers provided. Finally students are guided with a template to create a leaflet to persuade teenagers to stop eating meat. The question mirrors a GSCE writing task. Twenty-slides in total which could take three lessons - introduction and practice with two lessons to begin and create leaflet.

Text Analysis Questions

Text Analysis Questions

When investigating how to read and analyse a text, a number of different aspects need to be considered. Having a basic overview of the text is important. Additionally, knowing whether the text conforms to the basic conventions of its genre and pointing out how stylistic and language devices have been used to create shades of meaning and effect is essential.
