Register Recaps - Lesson Starter Activities

Register Recaps - Lesson Starter Activities

5 Great lesson starter activities that can be adapted for ANY subject or curriculum. Activities are fun and focus on pupil choice for theory and literacy recap! Download the PowerPoint to use or adapt to suit your subject area. Brightly coloured with a simple layout: Knowledge Wheel: Students have to get from A-B by answering the questions correctly. However, if they want to get the most points, the must take the long route around, answering the more difficult coloured questions. This method gives students a choice and is differentiated for different levels of ability. Target Practice: Using 3 darts, students must select 3 questions to answer to try to get the most points. Question difficulty varies based on the number of points each colour is worth. Again, this method gives students a choice and is differentiated for different levels of ability. Keyword Scrabble: Students must figure out each of the keywords by answering the clues and matching the letters to the total number of points. This activity is a great way to check student understanding and correct spellings. Connect 4 Analysis: Students must connect 4 in a row, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. At the top of each column there is a product analysis heading. Student can only connect 4 if they correctly analyse the product based on the heading. For example: Analysis the function of the torch, iPhone, fidget spinner and washing machine. Analysing the aesthetics of the watch, consumer of the baby toy, function of the fidget spinner and material of the Xbox pad. The gives students a choice from a range of analysis categories. Vocab Snap: Students have 2 minutes to match the vocabulary word to its definition. Using a mini whiteboard they can write, 5E…1C etc. This is a great way of embedding keywords and literacy easily.

Football World Cup medal design

Football World Cup medal design

With the Football World Cup 2018 having just started, the children will enjoy designing their very only medal. This simple project will give the children the opportunity to act out some footballing poses and try to draw each other in those poses as stick figures. They will then work out how big they need to make the drawings and improve the quality of their sketching. Having chosen their favourite design, they can then develop the stick figure into a final idea and then add colour to it. If you are able, you can prepare some cardboard blanks to stick the medal onto and then add some ribbon, or you could just leave it as a design activity. I find it useful to bring some footballs in to help with the role play, a selection of medals to look at and draw stick figures on the board emphasizing the joints by adding a little dot where they are.

School Robot Challenge 2018 - design a space robot and moonbase (ages 4-12)

School Robot Challenge 2018 - design a space robot and moonbase (ages 4-12)

This competition is intended to engage and inspire school children and students through the subject of robotics and space exploration. It aims to provide a compelling introduction to computer aided design, robotics, and space exploration through the design and modelling of a virtual robot at work on another planet. The competition is open to all school children and students in the UK from the ages of 4 to 18. There are two competitions: one for ages 4-12 and the other for ages 13-18. What will I learn? The software accompanying this challenge (links below) will provide participants with a basic introduction to 3D computer aided design and modelling, as well as providing a medium to explore links between creative art and computing. This competition will allow entrants to explore and visualise their own ideas about the future uses of robots in space, and aims to be inspiring, educational and fun. Who is running the competition? The competition is run by the EPSRC UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems Network (UK-RAS), a network of UK universities specialising in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. It is part of a family of competitions organised for the UK Robotics Week, which runs from 21 - 29 June 2018. A panel of judges, consisting of leading scientists and engineers, will select the winning designs in each age category. What are the judges looking for? The judging panel will select their favourite robot and planetary environment. We are looking for creative entries: this could be a robot servicing a spaceport or outpost, or a robot undertaking scientific investigation and exploration on an unusual planet, or any other application of robots in space that you can think of! The judges will choose winning designs that are innovative, interesting, fun, compelling, technically advanced and visually appealing. How do I enter the competition? All you need to do is follow the instructions outlined in the instruction pack! If you get stuck please email us. The competition is split into 2 categories by age group: 4 - 12yrs and 13 - 18yrs. Deadline for submission of entries: Friday 15th June 2018, 23:00 BST

Technology : Consumer Profile Cards (activity)

Technology : Consumer Profile Cards (activity)

Being a Designer means stepping out of your comfort zone and forgetting about your own preferences & needs. However, I have noticed that this is sometimes lost in classroom practice. Students are given a design brief or problem to solve, yet the final outcome is bias and based upon what THEY like and want. Students design something for themselves that they can take home and use - This resource prevents this from happening! 12 different consumer cards that are purposely written in a paragraphs, so that students can dissect the information, like a reading comprehension, pulling out the important facts that they need to know. This will show a detailed understanding. The cards include a range of people that have a variety of likes, needs and wants. This encourages students to choose a suitable consumer that is relevant to the problem that they have been asked to solve. (For example, if the problem is to design a product to help the elderly, then the Baby consumer profile card would not be suitable - Students should be expected to work this out after class discussion). Print on A4 or A3 paper and laminate!
