Father's Day Lollipop Tie Rack

Father's Day Lollipop Tie Rack

With Father’s day just around the corner, this lollipop tie rack activity is just the thing to make any Dad happy. You could prepare it on Monday, start it Tuesday afternoon, continue with it on Wednesday, make the card on Thursday and assemble it on Friday ready to take it home for Sunday. Essentially, this is a Father’s Day craft activity where the children can make a very simple tie rack using only 9 lollipop sticks to give to Dad on Father’s Day. It is also a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their fine motor skills by following a template, being accurate and being patient while the glue dries during the various stages. It will cover you Design and Technology quota for the week! Included in the download is a sticking template which gives assembly instructions, a packaging template that can double up as a card where the children can decorate and add a simple message and a few photographs showing what the tie rack and packaging looks like when complete. Use PVA (wood glue) for strong joins. Stage 1 and the 3 parts of the hook can be made to begin with and left overnight to set, so a good activity to do at the end of the school day. Continue with the next stages during the following morning and the hanger should be ready to go home by the end of the school day or better still the next day to fully allow the glue to set. If weights can be placed onto the rack when it is drying it will help the joints to be even stronger but this is not essential - the tie rack is surprisingly strong and will hold 8 ties when full. Each child will need 9 lollipop sticks, any colour or a combination of colours or use plain sticks which the children can decorate. Two of the lollipop sticks will need to be cut in half to make the hook. I used strong scissors to make a dent at the edges and then snapped them carefully putting my thumbs and index finger as close to the middle as possible. Alternatively, if you have access to junior hacksaws, either you or the children could cut them in half. You could bundle them together and either put some tape or an elastic band around them to make cutting quicker. The ends could be sanded using sandpaper or even a nail file! The assembling template needs to be photocopied and could be laminated to use year after year. You could also write the child’s name on the laminate with a board marker so it is easier to locate the next day. The packaging template just needs to be photocopied too. You can decide if your TA cut them out or you allow the children to - once cut, fold in half and then decorate. Cut out the circle when it is folded in half and then staple into place around the hanger. This craft activity should be lots of fun. The children will love it and the Dads will love it even more.

Technology : Consumer Profile Cards (activity)

Technology : Consumer Profile Cards (activity)

Being a Designer means stepping out of your comfort zone and forgetting about your own preferences & needs. However, I have noticed that this is sometimes lost in classroom practice. Students are given a design brief or problem to solve, yet the final outcome is bias and based upon what THEY like and want. Students design something for themselves that they can take home and use - This resource prevents this from happening! 12 different consumer cards that are purposely written in a paragraphs, so that students can dissect the information, like a reading comprehension, pulling out the important facts that they need to know. This will show a detailed understanding. The cards include a range of people that have a variety of likes, needs and wants. This encourages students to choose a suitable consumer that is relevant to the problem that they have been asked to solve. (For example, if the problem is to design a product to help the elderly, then the Baby consumer profile card would not be suitable - Students should be expected to work this out after class discussion). Print on A4 or A3 paper and laminate!

Technology Challenge Cards

Technology Challenge Cards

How are you challenging your most able students? Challenge Cards are a great way to embed high level learning activities into every lesson and more importantly… Students love completing them! Ofsted regularly report that more able students are not being challenged enough in most subjects. Some leave primary school with high SATS results, yet fail to leave secondary school with top GCSE grades. Challenge Cards have been created as an alternative to ‘more of the same’ extension tasks. Cards have been developed for individual year groups and contain either theory or design related activities - activities relate to the scheme of work but are always topics that students have not studied yet. Each card includes a checklist which allows students to tick off success criteria as they work through the activity. Challenge Cards also include house point rewards which are dependant on how well the student has completed the challenge. There is also a space for a teacher comment. Staple the cards to the corner of student booklets so that challenge activities are evident in work scrutiny. Students also enjoy finding these in their books once work has been marked and handed back to them in fix-it time. Cards should be printed in black and white on bright green A4 card. This makes them stand out in class books and look appealing to students. (Includes: Six different KS3 cards as examples) This resource is fully editable using Microsoft PowerPoint

Projects on a Page full pack of 21 planners

Projects on a Page full pack of 21 planners

The Projects on a Page scheme of work was introduced in 2014 to help primary schools in England implement the National Curriculum for D&T in an imaginative way. Based on universal principles of effective teaching and learning in D&T, it is also a valuable resource for schools in other parts of the UK and further afield. This scheme of work has been developed by the D&T Association’s Primary Working Group in association with D&T primary consultants. It comprises 21 A3 size project planners that give scope for teachers to use their creativity and professional judgment, whilst ensuring the quality, integrity and rigour of children’s learning. Each planner has 20-step planning guidance and accompanying teaching tips and techniques, a glossary, an example of iterative design appropriate to the project, and practical advice on using resources, useful sketches and diagrams in a helpsheet format to support teachers delivering the project in the classroom. Also included are suggestions on class organisation, links to resources and a glossary of technical terminology related to the project. A guidance booklet shows how to use the planners to full effect and the context in which they should be used. Year 1/2 Mechanisms - Sliders and levers Year 1/2 Structures - Freestanding structures Year 1/2 Food - Preparing fruit and vegetables Year 1/2 Textiles - Templates and joining techniques Year 1/2 Mechanisms - Wheels and axles Year 3/4 Mechanical Systems - Levers and linkages Year 3/4 Mechanical Systems - Pneumatics (NEW) Year 3/4 Structures - Shell structures using computer-aided design (NEW) Year 3/4 Electrical Systems - Simple programming and control (NEW) Year 3/4 Textiles - 2-D shape to 3-D product Year 3/4 Food - Healthy and varied diet Year 3/4 Structures - Shell structures Year 3/4 Electrical Systems - Simple circuits and switches Year 5/6 Food - Celebrating culture and seasonality Year 5/6 Textiles - Combining different fabric shapes Year 5/6 Structures - Frame structures Year 5/6 Electrical Systems - More complex switches and circuits Year 5/6 Mechanical Systems - Pulleys or gears Year 5/6 Mechanical Systems - Cams (NEW) Year 5/6 Textiles - Using computer-aided design in textiles (NEW) Year 5/6 Electrical Systems - Monitoring and control (NEW) Levers and Linkages and Pneumatics provide alternative ways of teaching Mechanical systems at Year 3/4, as do Cams and Pulleys and Gears at Year 5/6. The two Electrical Systems planners focus on the Crumble microcontroller. Full guidance is given in the accompanying booklets showing how to use the planners to full effect and the context in which they should be used.
