Experiments in Crime Questions and Answers

Experiments in Crime Questions and Answers

Crime is a multi-billion-dollar business. Crime is also deeply embedded in our social, economic, political, religious and material worlds. But, surely it is wrong that, day after day, year after year, thousands of decisions are taken, millions of lives are disturbed and billions of dollars are being spent without robust evidence as to what is the best course of action for those involved in, affected by, or afflicted through crime. Experiments seek to offer hope, they seek to offer help and they seek to assist in making this world, our world, your world, a better place. Fully loaded with questions and examples from across the world, with 27 sections, 44 tables and diagrams, 203 references and 246 pages, this book aims to:  share rich contemporary examples of experiments in crime that you can read, discuss, learn from, relate to and find out more about  give you insight and inspiration with respect to experiments in crime  introduce the language, terms, tips and traps of experiments in crime  empower you to become more confident, capable and curious about experiments in crime  inspire you to ask questions of experiments in crime and of the evidence they produce  encourage you to look at experimental and non experimental evidence  encourage you to look at real life data and how you can use it to help support and challenge experiments in crime  make you do something: think, talk, listen then act.

Using lego in English and Maths

Using lego in English and Maths

As we all know sometimes children need some encouragement and creative teaching to learn! Lego can be a great motivator for children. So I thought I would share some of the resources i've created using Lego compatible bricks. I use the following resources in small group and 1:1 interventions. I created the resources using Lego compatible bricks which I bought in bulk at a discount store. I used a label maker to produce stickers to label the bricks. The PDF download shows images of what I created. ENGLISH - Phase 2,3 and 5 phoneme bricks. One blocks for individual letters and two blocks for digraphs and trigraphs. I colour coded these to make them easier to organise. I've used these with children to help them learn phonemes by creating phoneme towers. The more they learn the higher their tower...great motivator for male students. I've also used them to create real/alien words. Dry-wipe markers can be used to make the sound buttons. I've also turned them over to play turn it over and read games to practise segmenting and blending. If the child reads the word correctly they can add it to their tower. -High Frquency Words. Again I use them to create towers. It's a great visual for children to see how many words they've learnt. It's a great motivator to learn new words as it increases the size of their tower. - Contraction building. A great visual representation of how apostrophies work. MATHS - Fraction walls. I've pictured a small example using an 8 brick however children could use base plates and bricks to represent fractions. 1/2 and 1/4 being the easiest depending on the dimensions of your bricks. Very visual! -Ordering numbers. I colour coded odd and even numbers to make it more obvious. The colours supports children to correct themselves and notice patterns with numbers. - Partioning and place value. Very visual presentation of place value. The picture represents tens and units but with longer bricks there is no reason why your could not incorporate hundreds/thousands. I usually read out a number and ask the children to build it. If there are any which take your fancy, send me a personal message and I can make some for you and give you a quote :)

Learn To Read With Phonics (Bundle 13)

Learn To Read With Phonics (Bundle 13)

Learn To Read With Phonics Reading Packs are a quick and easy way to teach children to read in just six months. They are ideal for all ages (from 4 years plus), especially reluctant older readers of 7, 8, 9+, children with learning difficulties and children where English is a foreign language. The packs are designed to be used one to one or in small groups with a teacher and child or parent/guardian and child learning together. The packs consist of a structured course that build 44 phonic sounds into the text. As the children read the adventures of a loveable boy called Sam, they can have fun searching for hidden sounds. They will build up 44 sounds in total. This will enable them to read 80% of words in the English language, by breaking them down into sounds or syllables - pl ay ing. Children using phonics in this way progress fast. A series of stories, The Bouncing Castle and The Famous Cousin From The Country reinforce the complex middle sounds being learnt. By the end of the scheme, the child will be ready to progress to 'solo' reading books, such as Roald Dahl's 'Georges Marvellous Medicine' and 'Fantastic Mr Fox'. Many of the packs have cut out practice pages for matching words to pictures and phrases to pictures, to fix the sound words in the child's memory. The simple text and fun colour in sketches, appeal to young readers and have helped the authors to teach many, many children to read. The reading packs may be used in any order, just pick the pack for the sound you require. However, when using the packs for a complete non reader we suggest you start with packs teaching initial sounds (word building with three or four letter words). Then move on to learning phonic sounds in this order: ch, sh, wh, th, oo, ee, ar, or, ur, ir, er, magic e, ea, oa, ai, ay, oi, oy, oa, short y (as in happy), long y (as in sky), soft c (as in mice), soft g (as in engine), ou, ow, au and aw. Next, move onto more complex sounds as in, tion, le, el, ough, gue, que, ine, ue, ie, ei, prefixes and suffixes. How To Use Each pack introduces a sound. 1) Learn the sound with the child/children 2) Read the sentences or stories several times, encouraging the child/children to talk about the pictures. 3) At the end of the sentences or story, there is a list of words and phrases, which the child can match to the pictures. 4) Get the child/children to colour in the pictures. Practise each sound several times, until the child is familiar with it.

Learning To Read & Write - Pack 2 (keywords, common blends, high frequency words)

Learning To Read & Write - Pack 2 (keywords, common blends, high frequency words)

10 activities to further develop their reading and writing for Early Years and Key Stage 1. Covers keyword requirements form the National Curriculum. Helping to develop reading, writing, punctuation and spelling skills. The key words provided can be cut out and used as flash cards to help children read and recognise the word. They can use each word individually to practise writing it. The sound cards can be cut out and used as flashcards. Continually repeating sounds can help children automatically read words that contain these sounds. Once they can do this, children should be encouraged to read the word straight off without sounding out. Making rhyming word lists can help children with their spellings. For each word they write, they need to: - know what they want to write - spell the word / words e.g. by sounding out - associate the sounds in each word to a letter/ letters - hold a pencil - use the pencil to form the letters

Causes of the Second World War (Appeasement): Was Neville Chamberlain a Coward?

Causes of the Second World War (Appeasement): Was Neville Chamberlain a Coward?

Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue of Hitler. Learning Intention and differentiated outcomes (SMSC). The lesson starts by covering the bigger picture: Who Neville Chamberlain was. The Munich Agreement. Defining Appeasement. Pupils' will then compete in teams in a literacy relay activity to identify the positives and negatives of appeasement. Pupils' will then collate their answers and arrange the factors into these categories before ordering the factors by significance. Pupil's then consolidate their judgment through answering a structured 8 mark exam style question. If time I then ask my pupils to peer assess with WW / EBI. Instructions and advice on how they lesson is to run can be found in the description of the presentation. Additionally I have included a source evidence Homework piece and a differentiated 'peep sheet' for less able pupils to help them consolidate the lessons learning. All videos are embedded and/or links provided.

WWI Home-front: Defense of the Realm Act (DORA) & Rationing.

WWI Home-front: Defense of the Realm Act (DORA) & Rationing.

This lesson could be used for one lesson. However, to gain the most out of this I suggest using it over a two lesson period dependent upon how much detail / discussion you wish to go into. Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue about the lesson. Learning Intention and differentiated outcomes (SMSC). The lesson is structured in order to achieve the learning outcomes: Expected: You can describe & explain the problems on the Home-front. (SMSC). Challenge: You can explain how DORA & rationing helped overcome these. Stretch: You can evaluate and analyse the impact of government intervention. Activities include a museum walk of propaganda posters, a diamond 9 ranking task of DORA's laws, discussion points from videos (SMSC / modern day link opportunities). Pupils finally consolidate though answering a structured 8 mark exam style question. If time I then ask my pupils to peer assess with WW / EBI. Videos are embedded or I have included the links in the presentation description.
