Literacy & Numeracy and Music - 6 simple starting point activities

Literacy & Numeracy and Music - 6 simple starting point activities

Literacy & Numeracy and Music - 6 simple starting point activities are simple activities you could try with your classes to begin to develop literacy and numeracy engagement in music. These first 6 activities are simple to do, with all necessary resources included to be copied and used. The activities are as generic as possible - they can be used across any topic you are studying, rather than "pigeon holing" into one individual category. There is no order to the activities - you simply choose one to match your needs and make it as long or as short as you like! Some of the activities might seem quite obvious, but I hope you will find something new to have a go at. The resource can be used across all age groups - they are simple enough to differentiate based on the group you have in front of you. For example, when writing about music, younger children may write single words, whilst older or more able children will write sentences or paragraphs. I hope you enjoy having a go at these activities - please leave some feedback and if there is something you would like to see in the future then let me know!

Musical Four Corners, Ta, Ti-Ti, Z Rhythms (Stick Notation)

Musical Four Corners, Ta, Ti-Ti, Z Rhythms (Stick Notation)

Musical 4 Corners is an interactive PowerPoint game that's great for reinforcing quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes with stick notation (ta, ti-ti, z). This game uses Kodály stick notation. See the links below if you prefer standard notation or save money with the stick and standard bundle. **If you've bought 4 Corners Ta, Ti-Ti, Z, in stick and standard, you already have this set. I've just separated the files for standard and stick.*** A favorite indoor recess game at my school is "4 Corners." I've modified the game so that each corner is a rhythm. There are also LOTS of slides so the game can be played for 5 minutes or 20. Instead of having an "it" person, you can just play the embedded audio clip. The students who are in the corner that matches the clip are out. You, the teacher, or a student who is "it" can also just sing one of the melodies on the slide. There is also a timer sound file between each slide with a ticking clock sound. This is a great way for students to practice audiation, rhythmic memory, and reading! Percussion Song

Percussion Song

This is a song detailing several percussion instruments in one to talk about how they help us keep rhythm with one another. Sung and played at the same time by using a ukulele and bass drum, what a great way to do something fun and educational for your child/children/students!

Beginner 4 note scales

Beginner 4 note scales

An introduction to scales for young beginners. I find it is beneficial to start students early with the concept of scales, even before they can play a full octave of notes on their instrument. This sheet explains the idea of scales and how to form them, and then encourages pupils to explore playing them in different ways. Useful for instrumental and classroom music teachers and their pupils.
