Activities Speaking activity 1

Activities Speaking activity 1

This is a partner speaking activity. Give students 1-2 minutes to draw lines from the name of a person to a picture of an activity and then to a day of the week. Students then take turns making sentences telling what each person is doing on each day. For example, “John rides a bike on Tuesday.” The partner must listen to the sentence and draw a line connecting those items. Names are in French, days are in English, but easy to edit so it can be used for any language.

KS2-3 German-Reading strategies arrow-whole lesson introduction to staged approach

KS2-3 German-Reading strategies arrow-whole lesson introduction to staged approach

Although the skills to access a text come naturally to some students, many others need to be supported in developing the necessary strategies. This tried and tested approach to reading provides a visual strategy which can be applied to a wide variety of texts in a second language or in English, improving not only language skills, but also general literacy. Particularly useful when exploiting authentic materials, it can equally be applied to more traditional texts and, once embedded, enables students of all ages to work successfully with more complex source materials than would otherwise have been the case. This resource models the strategy with a simple German text, however it can be applied to texts of a wide range of difficulty. It includes a ten slide teaching presentation to introduce the strategy, comprehensive teaching notes accompanied by thumbnails of all the materials, plus student sheets and the strategy arrow, which can be laminated for repeated use. The resource is also available modelled with a French text and with a Spanish text.

Curling Winter Olympics Vocabulary game for Interactive Whiteboard

Curling Winter Olympics Vocabulary game for Interactive Whiteboard

Tying in with the Winter Olympics 2018, this is a curling game which I have used for MFL lessons (ask differentiated vocabulary and / or conjugation questions to decide who goes first, and whether students can launch a stone / how many stones they are allowed to launch). Points are gathered either by ‘zone’ the stone is touching, e.g. 1 for outer (blue), 2 for outer white, 3 for red and 4 for inner white, or (like the real curling game) you score depending on how close you are to the middle. If the closest stone is red or yellow, that team gets 1 point. If the second closest is the SAME colour, that team gets 2 points. If it is a different colour, the closest team only gets 1 point, etc. Users simply flick the stone from behind one of the two lines (for left- and right-handed players) towards the house and the scores are totalled after all 8 have been thrown.
