European Cakes

European Cakes

For a food tasting lesson - This ppt is an introduction to cakes in France, German-speaking countries, and Spain. It includes Youtube clips on how to make madeleines, strudel and turron. After each section, pupils were able to taste madeleines/strudel/pop dots (bunuelos). I bought these in Costco/Sainsbury’s/Costco. After the food tasting had finished, there is a quiz and wordsearch (see attachment).

It’s simple, quantifies the number of impressive features used, and awards a mark. It allows students to best their previous score, whether by overall mark or by specific goals such as using more connectives.

Spanish grammar auction activity

Spanish grammar auction activity

How do you make grammar less dry? Is there a way to test understanding whilst also getting students to focus on simple but important details like the ending of a word? It turns out there are lots of ways of doing just that; this is one of them. It works really well in any language, and can be easily adapted to different topics in less than 5 minutes. Each student, or group of students, starts with a set amount of imaginary money and works through the questions to end with more or less. It’s the speed and the competition of it that makes it exciting and helps you to really see who is looking at the detail. To differentiate, you can simply alter how long you leave each slide on the board. You can even get a student to explain why an answer is correct, so you can broaden the focus a little and offer a little reward such as letting that student (or the group) be first out of the door at the end of the lesson. This is so versatile and so easy to change that what this resource really is is a template. If you don’t have, or don’t want to use, mini-whiteboards, then simply remove that line of the slide and replace it with your preferred alternative.

English movie, French movie, German movie - 3 workbooks: generic, self-adapting and versatile. Film

Each page is a worksheet! 3 workbooks in 3 languages - self-adapting, versatile, generic. You may like to use one workbook in one language only or in a mixture of 2 languages, depending on your subject and/or on the language ability of your students. All 3 workbooks are identical but for the language in which they are written. If you are using the Word doc version, you can copy and paste tasks from one book into the other to mix up your languages depending on your students’ language ability. You will also find a document with suggestions for use and differentiation in this pack. Workbook files are provided in 2 formats, i.e. letter and A4 and also as Word doc or as a pdf file. Ideal for class work, cover lessons and self-study, most tasks will fit the majority of movies watched and studied in schools. Tasks appeal to a variety of skills: discussion, communication, observation, explanation and more. Students are also challenged to use their creativity and justify their answers. Pupil Collective Response Marking Template

Pupil Collective Response Marking Template

This is a great way to save time marking, yet provide detailed feedback to the whole class. Headings can be adapted, but they focus on the main aspects of improving pupils’ work, such as what they did well, how they can improve, along with grammar and spelling issues, along with praising those in the class that went above and beyond. This can be used in any subject.

Retrieval Grid Practice Template and Example

Retrieval Grid Practice Template and Example

An example template that can be used with retrieval practice, linking to the concept of asking students to “retrieve” the information that we want them to learn. Each colour links to an amount of points, which means the text can be adapted to suit whichever topic you are doing. This specific example is for languages.

German Word Wall Cards (Deutsch Aktuell 1 vocabulary words)

German Word Wall Cards (Deutsch Aktuell 1 vocabulary words)

I created these word wall cards for my German 1 and 2 classroom. They use vocabulary words I selected from Ch. 1-12 of Deutsch Aktuell 1. (I cover chapters 1-6 in German 1, and 7-12 in German 2.) Each card includes the German word, an image, and a brief English definition. For nouns, I have also included articles and plurals. They are intended to be printed on white 8.5x11-inch paper using a color printer. Please note that I work in a small rural town in the US, so I have tried to use both pictures and definitions that my students will find easy to understand. Students and teachers who live in other areas may find some of the dialect or pictures difficult to interpret. I created these using PowerPoint and then exported them to PDF. Those original PPT files are too large to upload here, but feel free to message me if you would like me to email you the original files, so that you can edit them to substitute pictures and/or definitions that are more appropriate for your own students.

GERMAN TELLING TIME DOMINOES #1

GERMAN TELLING TIME DOMINOES #1

These telling time dominoes games are really popular with students - they’re a great alternative to more traditional ‘drilling’ activities, and help students become more independent in their learning. They’re really ideal for pair and small-group work / centers. The focus in on o’clock, half past (which can be a bit tricky in GERMAN!), quarter to and quarter past the hour. There are 3 differentiated challenges: clock times in order, with the time phrase first; clock times in topsy-turvy order, also with the time phrase first and finally, clock times in topsy-turvy order, but with the clock face first. The background design is different on each challenge, so students can easily identify which challenge they’re working on. I’ve included a reference booklet, which my students always find helpful as a ‘forever’ reference resource, and particularly when they’re learning how to tell time. There are two GERMAN-ENGLISH lists - the first with all the time phrases in order and the second corresponding to the second challenge, with all the time phrases in topsyy-turvy order. The resource consists of three, non-editable files in a zipped format: dominoes games x 3 challenge levels reference booklet Although it’s time-consuming, laminate the dominoes if you can, as they’re easier to play with, and will last for a very long time! The TERMS OF USE explain the product license: the games are copyright, and for single-teacher / purchaser / classroom use only. VIELEN DANK UND VIEL SPAß BEIM SPIELEN!

Weltmeisterschaft/ World Cup 2018 - Russia/Russland - Top Trump cards

I have created top trump cards for German and English players who are in the world cup squad for their respective country. If used please credit - they took ages to make!!
