Die Olympischen Spiele 2016 Rio

Die Olympischen Spiele 2016 Rio

Powerpoint which presents key vocabulary to do with sports at the Olympics, as well as pushing students to write complex, then very complex, sentences about why they might want to (not) see certain events or visit the games. Should cover a whole lesson, depending on your lesson length and what else you do, of course, hence I´ve put it as a whole lesson, rather than a presentation. Note - this is adapted (only slightly!) from the version already on here that I made for the London 2012 Olympics, so you might recognise a lot of it!

GCSE German Vocabulary Starter

GCSE German Vocabulary Starter

This starter is a MS Excel spreadsheet which has been designed to provide you with a simple test to give your pupils at the start of a lesson, freeing you up to do registers, get pupils settled etc. It will randomly select 20 words for your pupils to translate from a predetermined list of your choice. This file has been preloaded with over 2000 words and phrases, split into sheets as follows; Environment (96), Jobs (168), Health (280), Holidays (246), Places (254), Free time & Media (346), Relationships (308), School & Careers (196), Core (163), Food & Drink (130), Lifestyle (348), Interests (98) Clicking macro enabled buttons allows; • the translations to be set from German to English or from English to German, • answers to be revealed individually or as a group • all questions to be reset. Pressing F9 will refresh the file and bring another randomly generated set of questions. You can control the words to provide bespoke lists for each of your classes. Each list of words can be added to with words of your choice and each word in the list can be switched off using a drop down button. This will not remove the word from the file but prevents the word from being selected. Save a copy of the file for each of your classes and add words by switching them on as your class increases its vocabulary. If you download it, please return and review the product and as always, pass the cost onto your school.

Developing speaking in German: Shrink me, grow me!

Developing speaking in German: Shrink me, grow me!

A way of modeling and encouraging extended answers. Model a lengthy sentence, and students must take turns to remove one element but leave the sentence 'intact' (i.e. still sensical) until they get down to the most basic structure. Then it's their turn to build up again from a basic structure, element by element. Some students will want to race ahead and put in 5 things at once - this is ok if they can do it correctly; if not, encourage them to go step by step. The example here is on the topic of environment/Umwelt.

World News Headlines Research

World News Headlines Research

Teenagers are more connected that ever and yet they seldom have any understanding of major world events. This handout is targeted toward broadening student's global horizons in a format that is not overwhelming for them. Instead of picking single articles for students to read I have them research world headlines (link to BBC News site included in handout directions), thus reducing the stress or frustration they may feel when assigned full articles. Is also a good sub plan. The purpose of this activity is to help students develop background knowledge of world events and increase global citizenship. I generally take my students to the computer lab to do this for a 50 minute period. That way I can walk around and discuss the topics they are looking at together. The conversations have been very interesting and I can tell they learn a lot. PDF file.

Upper Level German Activities

This is a bundle of my upper level resources so far. These often require the use of higher level grammar and vocabulary. They are not grammar specific activities though. I have a different bundle for grammar.

Die Schlagzeilen der Welt und Deutschland: New Headlines

Die Schlagzeilen der Welt und Deutschland: New Headlines

Teenagers are more connected that ever and yet they seldom have any understanding of major world events. This handout is targeted toward broadening student's global horizons in a format that is not overwhelming for them. Instead of picking single articles for students to read I have them research world headlines (link to Deutsche Welle site included in handout directions), thus reducing the stress or frustration they may feel when assigned full articles. I assign this to all levels of German even upper levels. I find that the more background knowledge students have about world events the easier it is for them to understand target language text I choose to work on. The purpose of this activity is to show students how big of a player Germany is in the world news. Now more than ever Germany is leading Europe through turbulent times. Students should be aware of how their language skills and background knowledge about Germany could be an asset in their future careers if they choose to work in an industry involving the global market. Evolving into a successful German student and Global Citizen is an essential goal for any language program! I generally take my students to the computer lab to do this for a 50 minute period. That way I can walk around and discuss the topics they are looking at together. The conversations have been very interesting and I can tell they learn a lot. I also don't force them to only focus on Germany, because knowledge of all world news help them to develop an interest in the large world, thus increasing their interest of foreign study, which would increase their interest to continue with the language.

Speak, Write and Play In German

Speak, Write and Play In German

Are you learning German? Are you looking for a fun way to learn German? I have developed a way to learn different languages based on my experience as an ESL teacher. This pack has 57 different settings for students to talk about in German. The worksheets themselves are in English and the students do need to translate the places and objects they see into German. At the end of the session, the students can play a fun game of word bingo to show they have mastered that day's vocabulary. Try it, it is a lot of fun for everyone! * Please note - these resources provide visual prompts, not specific language instruction. German Bingo pack: This is a simple starter game for students. There are 114 different pictures to choose from. Select a single picture and project the image on the wall or share it with the class as a hand-out. Let's Talk in German!: This set of cards looks at 57 different settings. The teacher describes something in the top card. The students then use this to model a sentence using the bottom set of pictures. There are lots of things to see and describe in every picture. When the students have completed this task, they can repeat it by working in pairs to discuss each picture. Let's Write in German pack: There are lots of ways of using this teaching pack. It could be used as writing assessment for students learning German. The students could write about a topic in German before and then after a topic, using the second worksheet at the end of the topic.

Die Olympischen Spiele 2016 - Olympic Games 2016

Die Olympischen Spiele 2016 - Olympic Games 2016

A range of resources to introduce the Olympic sports. The teacher PowerPoint includes a summary slide of the disciplines and a quick quiz of 10 sports to match up (this is easy to edit). There are 3 resources to test and reinforce knowledge of the disciplines; a crossword which is accompanied by a solution, there is also a word cloud containing the disciplines whereby the pupils translate the disciplines. Finally there is a word search containing 19 of the sports , pupils translate the sports and find the German. This is a really good selection of resources to introduce the games. All resources are easy to print.
