ANIMALEASE An Introduction to Music Making, Notation and Rhythm (With MP3 Audio)

Music making should be fun, irrespective of age and ability. The purpose of this guide is to provide the foundations of rhythm that can be used in a variety of learning environments. It will introduce a person to musical notation using animal names that will already be familiar to them. It works by chanting the animal names in time to a given pulse. Linking this then to a group of written musical notes to sing, tap, bang, shout, or whistle. This is not a step by step guide and we encourage anyone who uses this book to develop their own ideas using the framework. No two Animalease sessions will be the same and nor should they be. Children often see this method as a game (this is completely fine), and as it uses information that they already possess, the pupil has less to think about. This results in a more relaxed performance and learning environment. The focus should always be on active music making (but ensure that it is always in time). We have found over the years of using this method that the vast majority of pupils would be able to perform the following information in a short space of time. Before using this method, many pupils thought that making sense of written music would be very difficult. Pupils already familiar with the conventional counting method also found it useful and, in many cases, preferred it. We feel that the use of the animal names not only helps the pupil but also makes it accessible for someone who may not be confident to deliver music lessons, making Animalease a great tool for many primary school teachers. These simple reflection sheets can be used to respond to poor behavior in the classroom, especially as a piece of the process in schools practicing Restorative Justice. This product includes versions for Early Childhood, Primary, and Upper Grade students (all in English), along with corresponding versions of each in Spanish. On the left side of the sheet, the offending student reflects on their poor behavior, explains its effects on others, and has an opportunity to offer their perspective on the causes of the incident. On the right side, the student is prompted to write an apology which can contribute to the process of restoration with victim of their behavior. The Early Childhood version has spaces to draw responses instead of writing. The two sides can be cut apart, making it possible for the teacher to keep a record of the incident while the victim is able to keep their apology note. This pack contains a variety of visual support and activities to promote good oral hygiene routines with children and adults who find sequencing challenging. The pack includes a poster to keep by the sink, a checklist, flashcards, a mini flip chart, a colour in page and a cut and stick sequencing worksheet. I get the kids in class to use an old toothbrush to brush the paint onto the tooth colour in worksheet to encourage brushing in circular motions and ensure the whole tooth is cleaned. I laminate the mini flip chart and add double sided Velcro to the bottom of each flap that the kids close over when they have completed each step successfully. This weekly chart is excellent for supporting children and adults with communication difficulties and those who find structuring their day and week challenging, especially when there is a change to their normal routine. The pack includes 3 A3 sized charts (can be printed out on A4 via your print settings at home/school) in grey, pink and blue and also over 70 different symbols cards that are 4cmx4cm using the well known images from Mayer Johnston’s Boardmaker Studio. All you have to do is cut and laminate the small cards and they will last for a long time, no problems if one gets lost you can simply reprint. I use double sided velcro on mine, but blue/white tac works just as well. I use this in my class and have given parents a copy to use at home so we provide consistent, I also use this at my daily communication group for pupils to share their news and any changes to our normal routine so everyone can be prepared. Buy Clothes for Ed Sheeran - Students can develop their money recognition skills and using money to buy clothes for Ed with these activities. It is the equivalent of the old class shop, but revamped to be motivating using technology. It was designed for Secondary students with special needs, but can be easily used for all students. It is an age appropriate Money Math activity for secondary students, where they are motivated to purchase clothes for Ed. Once dressed they can listen to one of his songs using Youtube. There are a number of matching the monies used in the activity. There is a hard copy version plus a money visual symbol board to use to support student learning. There are is an accompanying worksheet in A4 or A3 size to print.

Although frustrating, it is important to remember that they are not doing it on purpose. Impulse-control problems can be mostly neurological in nature (i.e. children with ADHD often have lower levels of dopamine, which can lead them to reflexively respond to their environment by disregarding the social norms of waiting their turn. Younger children also have difficulty taking turns because they have not properly developed the impulse control skills that come as they mature). Reminding children to stop interrupting using verbal means in front of the entire class can be embarrassing to a child with ADHD or impulse-control issues. This visual prompt serves as a reminder by using simple, concrete pictures in a discrete way. Simply display this visual to your child or student and explain to them that you would love to hear their input and have them participate in activities with the group; however, it is important that everyone gets the opportunity to participate.
