KS3 The First Crusade topic, Lessons 1-6 bundle

This is a unit that I cover with my Year 7s in the second half of the Spring term. It is a 6 lesson enquiry into the question: What did the Crusades ever do for us? There are a range of engaging activities for the students to complete throughout each lesson. It is differentiated so that students of all abilities can access the lessons confidently. There is also an assessment lesson that enables the students to revise the content from the topic and then plan and answer a GCSE style exam question. This is a question stem geared towards the AQA specification. The question is focused on the concept of significance which can be found in Paper 2. The question in the assessment lesson is as follows: Explain the significance of the First Crusade between 1095 and 1099. Al Biruni - A sample chapter from 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'

This is a sample chapter from the forthcoming book, ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ by Tom Burkard and Colin McKenzie. Al Biruni is recognised as one of the greatest scientists of Islam. He was one of the first to recognise the importance of peer review, and his studies straddled the fields of philosophy, maths, astronomy and Earth science. It is aimed at higher ability students, and is an excellent resource for revision, homework or ‘flipped learning’. Further chapters are also being made available for review and evaluation. This chapter tells the story of Al Biruni and details his work on: The Decimal System Gravity Astronomy Geology Density Mineral Hardness Heat and Light Each chapter of Standing on the Shoulders of Giants gives a brief biography of a great physicist and is linked to an explanation of their discoveries that is relevant to the school curriculum. I have used this chapter for revision, homework and as a ‘flipped learning’ activity, where students are encouraged to independently learn the basics of a topic before it is taught in class. Our chapters are also very effective for use in ‘quiet reading’ sessions. The literacy level here is ‘higher’ and we have found this content to be very engaging as extension work for higher ability students.

Why did Medieval people go on the Crusades? Interactive PowerPoint Adventure

If you’re looking for a fun and interactive way for your students to learn about the crusades this PowerPoint-based lesson could be for you. It’s based on the idea of ‘choose your own adventure’ games. Students time travel back to Medieval England and find out the reasons why people went on the crusades to Jerusalem. Students have to navigate their way through the presentation making decisions on who they ‘speak’ to and what they read in order to answer the questions on the question sheet. The students then can use their discoveries to answer the ‘mini-essay’ question: Why did people go on Crusade in the Middle Ages? CONTAINS: INTERACTIVE POWERPOINT QUESTION SHEETS MODEL ANSWER SHEETS I have used this with my classes every year and they enjoy it a lot. It’s just a different way to learn the topic or to refresh their memories for a test. If you have access to a computer suite it works very well as an individual or pair lesson but it easily be used in a teacher led lesson with the whole class. I have done this both ways and it has been successful. With older years (Year 7) it would work well as a supplement to a wider unit on the crusades. I hope you like it!
