Applying Visual Literacies in ESL Learning - Creating Stories about Place

Applying Visual Literacies in ESL Learning - Creating Stories about Place

This combined lesson and plan is designed for Intermediate ESL/EFL and ESOL learners who are ready to expand their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through imagining different places. The associated activity includes visual texts (images), a series of questions to guide classroom interactions, and vocabulary for elicitation toward developing effective speaking and writing skills. This is a semi-structured activity where students are encouraged to draw on their own experiences of different places. The activity moves the student from being a visual spectator to being a textual critic. By learning in an independent but guided way students can better prepare for the independent learning expectations of tertiary or workplace learning. This resource can be adapted for a particular curriculum or used in a stand alone session of 2-4 hours.
