Smoking in Schools - Reading comprehension for IB French B

Smoking in Schools - Reading comprehension for IB French B

This article looks at how certain French schools have started to allow students to smoke on the premises after the November terrorist attacks in Paris and the state of emergency, alleging that students would be safer smoking at school than outside. Ideal as a preparation for French B SL Paper 1 when covering the topic of health and smoking, or looking at current affairs. It could also match the difficulty of Text A in an HL paper. The questions are modelled exactly on the comprehension questions in the exam. Can be used for a mock exam or an end of unit assignment. Can also be used in class. I have included a markscheme at the end.

New GCSE Unit of work on World Issues

New GCSE Unit of work on World Issues

This unit of work focuses on World issues, solutions to World issues, the environment and a comparison between French and British schools. It is aimed at developing speaking and listening skills. Speaking tasks include role-plays and description of pictures, which can easily lead to free flowing conversations (part of the new GCSE). However, there is material to do reading and writing. Lesson 8 goes through a French song called "L'hymne de nos Campagnes" to add a cultural element to the unit, along with lesson 11 that deals with French schools and the French system. Resource 11 goes with lesson 8 and resource 12 is an improvement prompt you can use when peer-assessing speaking and teacher assessing as well, which will leave a trace of the work done in class in the books.

Illness, injuries and problems taught via the refugee crisis.

Illness, injuries and problems taught via the refugee crisis.

A series of PowerPoint presentations on problems, injury and illness, taught through the thought-provoking and meaningful context of the Syrian conflict and refugee crisis. Pupils learn about the Syrian crisis, whilst building their language and grammar skills to write and describe images spontaneously in line with the new French curriculum. Includes slide notes, starters, objectives and one piece of homework. Focuses of the three lessons (in chronological order) include: 1. Body parts and describing what hurts. 2. Using prepositions correctly with 'avoir mal à' (talking about self and others). 3. Describing symptoms of illness/ problems (cold/ hot/ hungry, etc.). 4. Understanding longer texts and vocabulary to describe a refugee's situation. 5. Using the verbs avoir/ être succesfully in the context of illness and problems. 6. Using their combined knowledge to spontaneously talk and write about images, in which they imagine what it is like to be a Syrian refugee.
