Maths / STEM / Science Project Lesson - Density of Metals (Density, Ratio, Volume)

Maths / STEM / Science Project Lesson - Density of Metals (Density, Ratio, Volume)

This is a Maths/STEM project lesson based around calculating and comparing the density of different metals. Students have to first calculate and rank the densities of the metals, than answer questions based on combining different ratios of metals. These questions involve working out density, volume or mass from compound metal alloys of differing ratios. The lesson was pitched at year 10, and has a support sheet to enable access for foundation students. The lesson was designed to last 75 minutes, but actually the difficult quesitons in the sheet means it could easily last 90 minutes or more if required.

Harry Potter and the Conversion of Units

Harry Potter and the Conversion of Units

A student asked me to do a resource involving Harry Potter; we are doing unit conversion soon so this is what occurred. There are two tasks, one converting metric units (including a challenge involving areas and volumes) and a second converting between metric and imperial. I downloaded a font from dafont.com for free so if you want to edit the worksheets (I have included the Word versions so you can do so) you will have to download the font too.

Maths Manipulatives: Unitary Conversions

Maths Manipulatives: Unitary Conversions

The ability to convert units is a life skill. This resource allows the conversion of different units by laying out cards in a matching pattern. For those of you following a Maths Mastery CPA teaching style : The concrete manipulation of the cards leads to pictorial representations drawn in jotter before the writing of abstract calculations. See in action The conversions used cover length, time, mass and volume - imperial, metric and older! The cards have been set so that that can be printed back to back using Avery C32070 printer labels or C32011 Business cards , or just printed out on single sheets and cut up. Pupil Age Range: Primary onwards. Size : 2.6 MB Approx Format : secured PdF EBook.

Reading Scales Blockbusters Game

Reading Scales Blockbusters Game

Fun and engaging class game based on the old TV show Blockbusters, with questions on how to read values from a scale. Split the class into two teams, blue and white. The blue team must try to create a connected blue line from left to right, the white team must try to do the same from top to bottom. Click on the letters to link to the questions, if the answering team gets it right then click “Game board” to get back to the start, and click on the appropriate colour for that team to turn the tile blue or white.

Reading Scales Complete Lesson

Reading Scales Complete Lesson

NOTE - For some reason the preview for the powerpoint lesson plan seems to show the formatting weirdly (some textboxes look too small etc.), however when I download it and open the file it looks just as it should. Complete lesson on teaching pupils to take readings from scales (including decimals), with both Powerpoint and SMART Notebook versions. Fully differentiated worksheet included, with a slide of extra challenging questions to display on the board and stretch the upper end of the class. Blockbusters game included as an alternative activity. I have broken down the process of reading the scales quite a lot, you may wish to delete that part from the example slides and set it out yourself if you have your own preferred way of teaching it. I would also recommend checking to see if the starter questions need adjusting for your class, though I have tried to keep them quite generalised.

KS2 Maths (Mass)

KS2 Maths (Mass)

These topic-focused SATs questions at the end of a unit will help to test and extend students’ understanding as well as helping them to prepare for SATs next year. These questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard making feedback with students more efficient. Click 👉 tes.com/…/KS2-Maths-Questions… for similar-style compilations on the other KS2 topics.
This particular compilation is from the MEASUREMENT strand and contains questions on Mass. Students will have to read a variety of scales and be able to convert between grams and kilograms. Included are some worded questions with involve performing a variety of different calculations involving mass.
I have designed this compilation to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’! KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). I have spent a lot of time arranging the questions so that there is a general increase in difficulty as students work through them, and so that they fit on the pages better – this means less wasted space and significant paper-saving when printing 😃
👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. Pressure Reasoning Tasks

Pressure Reasoning Tasks

Several tasks all based on an Equdas GCSE question about pressure. These tasks are designed to improve students’ mathematical reasoning and were created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub. The tasks vary in difficulty. They are not intended to be used all together; just pick and choose one or two suitable ones for your class. Full credit to the awesome Mr Barton for the Venn diagram template. If you are after similar tasks on other compound measures, you might like https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/density-and-volume-reasoning-tasks-11837600 which explores density, https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/standard-form-reasoning-tasks-11839225 which is based on calculating surface gravity (with some density questions) and https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/speed-and-fuel-economy-reasoning-tasks-11837737 which explores speed and fuel economy. All feedback very welcome. I’d be really interested to hear which tasks you chose and how you used them!

Geometry Wordsearch Puzzle Sheet Keywords Settler Starter Cover Lesson Maths Shape Measure

Geometry Wordsearch Puzzle Sheet Keywords Settler Starter Cover Lesson Maths Shape Measure

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet on the theme of ‘Geometry’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Several tasks all based an Edexcel GCSE question (from the specimen papers) about standard form and substitution. These tasks are designed to improve students’ mathematical reasoning and were created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub. The tasks vary in difficulty, and include work on ratio, surface area and volume of spheres, units of compound measures, density and direct/inverse proportion. They are not intended to be used all together; just pick and choose one or two suitable ones for your class. The Venn diagram task is an excellent idea I swiped from the amazing Mr Barton. Converting measures colour in - what's the word? (Challenging!)

Students colour in the true boxes - this gives a letter per box, which is an anagram of an 8 letter word (triangle!) which the students have to find. There are some very challenging questions on both metric and imperial conversions, and also a bit of mathematical general knowledge thrown in too!

Solving GCSE Maths word problems: approach and template for EAL students/other with language needs

Solving GCSE Maths word problems: approach and template for EAL students/other with language needs

Recent changes to the GSCE maths exams have made them increasingly challenging for EAL students. More and longer word problems reduce the students’ ability to succeed purely on the basis of their maths ability; an increased level of English mastery is now required. This resource is intended to support EAL and other students (e.g. SEN) who find that the complex language of mathematics word problems can make them inaccessible. The approach has been tested with 30 GCSE word problems. It aims to allow such problems to be tackled more methodically and with greater confidence. The resource contains: • A copy of the approach sheet • A rationale • Two copies of the 30 questions (the second one provides a model for underlining). • Worked solutions for each problem, using the approach sheet. A second copy of these sheets is provided for the purposes of differentiation; this provides a scaffold for less confident students, modelling how to organise and diagrammatically represent the information from the question and allowing the students to do the calculations. • A list of common-usage words that regularly appear in word problems. This is suitable for: • EAL students (advanced stage) • Late arrivals in KS4 • Students with SEN may also find it more accessible.
