#### Functional Skills math converting between metric units crib sheet

This is a simple flow diagram style help sheet for converting metric units. I use this as part of my metric units lesson. I have highlighted the key conversions that are needed to be remembered for both level 1 and level 2 functional skills maths exams. As this is a topic many struggle with I have also put together a carousel of activities which is available to download in my shop: Let’sgetfunctional There are many different functional skills maths level 1 and functionals skills maths L2 resources available. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/convert-metric-units-carousel-functional-skills-maths-6-resources-11904624

#### Maths / STEM / Science Project Lesson - Density of Metals (Density, Ratio, Volume)

This is a Maths/STEM project lesson based around calculating and comparing the density of different metals. Students have to first calculate and rank the densities of the metals, than answer questions based on combining different ratios of metals. These questions involve working out density, volume or mass from compound metal alloys of differing ratios. The lesson was pitched at year 10, and has a support sheet to enable access for foundation students. The lesson was designed to last 75 minutes, but actually the difficult quesitons in the sheet means it could easily last 90 minutes or more if required.

#### Harry Potter and the Conversion of Units

A student asked me to do a resource involving Harry Potter; we are doing unit conversion soon so this is what occurred. There are two tasks, one converting metric units (including a challenge involving areas and volumes) and a second converting between metric and imperial. I downloaded a font from dafont.com for free so if you want to edit the worksheets (I have included the Word versions so you can do so) you will have to download the font too.

#### WHOLE LESSON METRIC UNITS (LENGTH) CONVERSION

This is a mega pack of USA worksheets using US standard units (imperial measurements). All answers are included. If bought independently , these 9 resources would cost £20.50, but I am offering them in this bundle for £14.00, a saving of 32%. To view items individually, please go to Maths Shop

Fun and engaging class game based on the old TV show Blockbusters, with questions on how to read values from a scale. Split the class into two teams, blue and white. The blue team must try to create a connected blue line from left to right, the white team must try to do the same from top to bottom. Click on the letters to link to the questions, if the answering team gets it right then click “Game board” to get back to the start, and click on the appropriate colour for that team to turn the tile blue or white.

The worksheet file for my lesson on reading values from a scale, including harder worded questions to challenge the higher end of the class.

NOTE - For some reason the preview for the powerpoint lesson plan seems to show the formatting weirdly (some textboxes look too small etc.), however when I download it and open the file it looks just as it should. Complete lesson on teaching pupils to take readings from scales (including decimals), with both Powerpoint and SMART Notebook versions. Fully differentiated worksheet included, with a slide of extra challenging questions to display on the board and stretch the upper end of the class. Blockbusters game included as an alternative activity. I have broken down the process of reading the scales quite a lot, you may wish to delete that part from the example slides and set it out yourself if you have your own preferred way of teaching it. I would also recommend checking to see if the starter questions need adjusting for your class, though I have tried to keep them quite generalised.

#### Make & test a Cartesian Diver - Materials & Forces

Relates to KS2 & KS1 science (materials and forces) and KS3 physics (floating & sinking, upthrust, pressure in fluids). The resource gives details of the parts required and where to source them, how to construct the Cartesian divers, and worksheets to help extract the relevant curriculum learning points from the activity.

Several tasks all based on an Equdas GCSE question about pressure. These tasks are designed to improve students’ mathematical reasoning and were created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub. The tasks vary in difficulty. They are not intended to be used all together; just pick and choose one or two suitable ones for your class. Full credit to the awesome Mr Barton for the Venn diagram template. If you are after similar tasks on other compound measures, you might like https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/density-and-volume-reasoning-tasks-11837600 which explores density, https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/standard-form-reasoning-tasks-11839225 which is based on calculating surface gravity (with some density questions) and https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/speed-and-fuel-economy-reasoning-tasks-11837737 which explores speed and fuel economy. All feedback very welcome. I’d be really interested to hear which tasks you chose and how you used them!

#### Geometry Wordsearch Puzzle Sheet Keywords Settler Starter Cover Lesson Maths Shape Measure

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet on the theme of ‘Geometry’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

#### Science Investigations Bundle

Various resources to support planning of science investigations. #### Solving GCSE Maths word problems: approach and template for EAL students/other with language needs

Recent changes to the GSCE maths exams have made them increasingly challenging for EAL students. More and longer word problems reduce the students’ ability to succeed purely on the basis of their maths ability; an increased level of English mastery is now required. This resource is intended to support EAL and other students (e.g. SEN) who find that the complex language of mathematics word problems can make them inaccessible. The approach has been tested with 30 GCSE word problems. It aims to allow such problems to be tackled more methodically and with greater confidence. The resource contains: • A copy of the approach sheet • A rationale • Two copies of the 30 questions (the second one provides a model for underlining). • Worked solutions for each problem, using the approach sheet. A second copy of these sheets is provided for the purposes of differentiation; this provides a scaffold for less confident students, modelling how to organise and diagrammatically represent the information from the question and allowing the students to do the calculations. • A list of common-usage words that regularly appear in word problems. This is suitable for: • EAL students (advanced stage) • Late arrivals in KS4 • Students with SEN may also find it more accessible.

They can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. They are similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after converting, ordering, adding or subtracting the measurement. Each puzzle contains a grid. Pupils circle any boxes containing errors, then put together the letters from these boxes to reveal a maths word. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their own work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. The range of puzzles in this resource is ideal for differentiation and / or to cater for a range of groups and classes across Key Stage 2 (KS2) and some early KS3.
