Theme Park Challenge - Maths

Theme Park Challenge - Maths

A good “Final Week” style activity which can last over several sessions or be finished in an afternoon. On sale for this final week of the term. Enjoy the Summer! Everything included - just add dice! This is a roleplay experience for children, aimed at Years 4 and above. Using squared paper and the instructions contained within, children design their own Theme park, use dice to generate the number of visitors, and see how much they made. Added problems such as rides not working add variation to each of the five days. Each ride has its own excitement rating and this means that children need to build a balanced park to fit the tastes of everyone. The game guides children and yourself through each of the steps with clear examples given for each step too. Mathematically this requires HTO x O skills, as well as some basic area knowledge (understanding that a footprint of 3x3 for a ride would mean 3 squares by 3 squares, so 9 squares). Custom-made games to fit a theme can be commissioned on request - get in touch!

STEM WORLD CUP MATHS SPY CAPER. GROUP WORK TEAM BUILDING. END OF YEAR ACTIVITY.

STEM WORLD CUP MATHS SPY CAPER. GROUP WORK TEAM BUILDING. END OF YEAR ACTIVITY.

ALL proceeds from this lesson resource will be donated to the charity STECS (Scottish Terrier Emergency Care Scheme UK). So please ask colleagues to purchase rather than “share”. This is an engaging, editable maths STEM activity with a World Cup & Russian spy theme. So it really works well for KS3 pupils who are interested in Football and also those who are totally not! Pupils use a cipher wheel to solve maths questions in each round (differentiated, some easy some more challenging), to find a Russian spy. It requires pupils moving around the school and some support from other colleagues eg receptionist, lab techs-maybe you could even convince the Head teacher to act as the spy? Everyone involved really enjoyed it. This took 2 hours, but could be shortened by removing middle rounds. I have had really good feedback from a variety of teachers at my school who delivered this maths based STEM lesson as non subject specialists (form tutors) during a collapsed timetable week at school with KS3 pupils . This could also be used as team building activity for staff and pupils.

Theme Park Manager percentages game (full lesson)

Theme Park Manager percentages game (full lesson)

This game puts students in charge of a theme park, for which they will choose from a selection of rides using the ride information cards, which detail the running cost and ticket price of each ride, the percentage of visitors that buy a ticket for it, its risk rating, and the cost of insurance for it. Each day a dice roll will then generate a random event which impacts on the fate of the rides, and students will have to use their knowledge of percentages to calculate the number of visitors buying a ticket for each of their rides that day. Included: – A powerpoint presentation outlining the rules and taking you through the game; – A set of information cards for students to use to choose their rides; and – A colour coded table for students to fill in throughout the game to keep track of the popularity of their rides, any fines they have to pay or compensation they are awarded. This is an excellent resource for consolidating students’ knowledge of how to calculate percentages of numbers and increase numbers by a given percentage. It also makes use of other basic number skills and strategic decision making. The game should take around 50 minutes start to finish, but it will be within your control to increase or decrease this as appropriate. Great to use as a fun end of term game that still gets students using lots of important maths skills without it feeling like work. <!—A fun end of term game maths game to reinforce knowledge of calculating percentages, which leads naturally to useful discussions as students are keen to calculate how much money they have earned. —>

KS2 Maths (Money Calculations)

KS2 Maths (Money Calculations)

These topic-focused SATs questions at the end of a unit will help to test and extend students’ understanding as well as helping them to prepare for SATs next year. These questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard making feedback with students more efficient. Click 👉 tes.com/…/KS2-Maths-Questions… for similar-style compilations on the other KS2 topics.
This particular compilation is from the MEASUREMENT strand and contains questions involving calculations with money. Note that the methods in my solutions are not restricted to standard multiplication and division techniques - if the multiplication or division is difficult I have often used an intuitive method to obtain the answer. Students can use whatever method they want - as long as they show sufficient working out.
I have designed this compilation to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’! KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). I have spent a lot of time arranging the questions so that there is a general increase in difficulty as students work through them, and so that they fit on the pages better – this means less wasted space and significant paper-saving when printing 😃
👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. Solving GCSE Maths word problems: template and worked examples for 30 questions

Solving GCSE Maths word problems: template and worked examples for 30 questions

This resource provides a template and highly structured approach to solving 30 GCSE word problems. More and longer word problems in the new maths GCSE reduce the students’ ability to succeed purely on the basis of their maths ability; an increased level of English mastery is now required. There are 30 GCSE word problems included and the approach aims to allow such problems to be tackled more methodically and with greater confidence. The resource contains: • A copy of the approach sheet • Two copies of 30 GCSE questions (the second one provides a model for underlining). • Worked solutions for each problem, using the approach sheet with answers • A PowerPoint containing the questions and answers on the template sheet • A scaffold for less confident students, modelling how to organise and diagrammatically represent the information from the question and allowing the students to do the calculations. • A rationale explaining the theory behind each stage on the template. There is also a list of common-usage words that regularly appear in word problems. As well as being suitable for the whole class, this would be particularly useful for: • EAL students (advanced stage) • Late arrivals in KS4 • Students with SEN may also find it more accessible.

Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Pupils circle any boxes containing errors. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the hidden maths word. (In the rounding puzzle pupils find the numbers that don’t round to specified target numbers and in some of the fractions puzzles, pupils must find non-equivalent fractions etc). Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. In many puzzles there is an extension question / challenge linked to the hidden word, which on some may require a little research if time. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. Thank you for your interest in my resources. I do hope your students enjoy using these puzzles. Please do consider giving a review on TES if you get a spare moment. I would be so grateful. Please visit FullShelf Resources for engaging, time-saving printables, activities and presentations to plan Primary (and some Secondary) Literacy / English, Maths / Numeracy and French lessons.
