Ratios in the form 1 to n, with a World Cup twist

A complete lesson on putting ratios in the form 1 to n, and some applications of this (for scale drawing and maps). Assumes pupils have already learned how to generate equivalent ratios and simplify ratios - see my other resources for a lesson on these topics. Activities included: Starter: A set of questions to recap simplifying a ratio. Main: Examples and a quick set of questions on writing a ratio in the form 1:n A bingo activity to further consolidate the same skill. Slides/examples to show how the form 1:n is useful for creating or interpreting scale drawings and maps. A nice activity on the theme of this summer’s World Cup in Russia. Pupils (rather optimistically) look at a possible route to the final for England, and the air miles the team will amass if they get there (by measuring and interpreting a map of Russia). A complete lesson on introducing 3-figure bearings. Activities included: Starter: A quick set of questions to remind pupils of supplementary angles. Main: A quick puzzle to get pupils thinking about compass points. Slides to introduce compass points, the compass and 3-figure bearings. Examples and questions for pupils to try on finding bearings fro m diagrams. A set of worksheets with a progression in difficulty, from correctly measuring bearings and scale drawings to using angle rules to find bearings. Includes some challenging questions involving three points, that should promote discussion about different approaches to obtaining an answer. Loci sticky dots activity and linked booklet

A printable set of 10 diagrams for showing loci and a supporting booklet. Designed for use after the associated constructions have already been taught. Stick these sheets up round the room/corridor. Furnish each pupil with a set of 10 sticky dots, available from all good stationers. They have to place a dot on each diagram according to the conditions given, and not in the same place as any other dot. (Rulers allowed at your discretion) When all 30(?) dots have been placed, it makes for a good discussion about the line/region that has been created. The booklet is a scaled down version of these diagrams for pupils to create the accurate versions of these loci with their knowledge of constructions. The matching cards are for those who may finish early and can have a go at interpreting contextual loci descriptions.
