In this project students gain an understanding of the engineering design process by building a cardboard arcade game where winning or losing completes an electrical circuit. Students will present their arcade game to an audience of middle school or elementary school students. This project was developed by Allen Distinguished Educators Rob Rambach and Patrick Dempsey. SUBJECTS: • Science — electrical circuits, Newton’s Laws • Engineering Design— diagrams, prototyping, user feedback • Social Studies—marketing OUTCOMES: Students will be able to: • Construct a working electrical circuit. • Explain how electrons move through their circuit. • Learn from failure. • Design and build an arcade game incorporating the circuit for a specific audience. • Explain force and motion concepts that relate to their game. • Effectively use the engineering design process. Deriving real life circular motion examples. Structured, independent worksheet.

A structured resource that guides students through deriving the equations for circular motion in a range of examples as required in the 2450 AQA A2 Physics syllabus. E.g. a car on a banked track, a long swing, the big dipper, a car on a hill. I split the class into groups of 3/4 and students worked through independently, occasionally requiring some teacher direction.

Rather than simply going through exam questions, I thought I’d utilise the whiteboards in my classroom. Students work in groups of 3. They each stand at a different question. They get 3 minutes to answer as much of the question before moving round one question. They then have 3 minutes to read the new question, read the solutions begun by their team-mate & add their own contribution. All groups do this twice (maybe more first time round??). Peer assess é accumulate the totals! Really hoping the class will learn from this activity how important it is to communicate their methods to the reader.
