Scientific Literacy

Scientific Literacy

This video introduces the concept of scientific literacy to secondary level students, how it relates to academic studies as well as citizenship in a democratic society. Specific examples from everyday life are examined: climate change, GMO foods, space exploration, genetic testing, health and medicine, to name a few. Students are walked through how to read a food label, in particular examining the ubiquity of high-fructose corn syrup in fast foods and soft drinks. The video concludes with tying scientific literacy in with the importance of making healthy choices. Video: 6'45" NGSS Standards for Life Sciences and Chemistry

The big energy show lesson plan

The big energy show lesson plan

The Big Energy Show is designed to get your whole school interested in using energy efficiently. It’s also a great opportunity to identify and work towards an energy reduction target. At the heart of the activity is a big bar chart. Designed by students, it should be big, bold and colourful and illustrate past and present electricity consumption. By showing the whole school how much energy you are using and setting reduction targets, everyone will be able to get involved to use energy more efficiently!

Year 2 - Science lesson - Forces - Egg drop experiment

Year 2 - Science lesson - Forces - Egg drop experiment

This Year 2 lesson pack looks into 'forces', 'materials' and is cross-curricular with Design and Technology. The children will learn about forces (in particular air resistance) and learn about the force that the ground exerts that causes the egg to break. The children then need to design and wrap the egg in a protective packaging to see which materials are better at doing so.
