Animal Jeopardy

Animal Jeopardy

Animal Jeopardy is a great way for your class to review your concepts and ideas about animals. The categories covered in this game are mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, adaptations, food chains, and animal vocabulary. I typically put the class into small groups or individuals and ask a member of the group to choose a color and dollar amount. That is the question that they have to answer. When I get the class to do it individually I get them to put the answers down on a piece of paper and mark them at the end of the game. NEW! I have now introduced a visual point scoring system to keep track of how much money the teams have earned. Simply click on the allocated game board and with each click the amount increases by $100 I run it on an interactive whiteboard but would be equally successful on a projector, computer or TV screen. Alternatively it could be run for an individual student on their own device.

Evolution Assembly or Class Play

Evolution Assembly or Class Play

Evolution Assembly or Class Play Cast of 30 (easily adjustable) Duration: Around 20 minutes without the inclusion of music suggestions. This script has ‘serious factual content’ including a timeline from the beginning of time to the present, but it has plenty of humour including a seriously bad set of jokes at the end! This assembly or class play is based on the Evolution and Inheritance unit of study and has the following coverage: How fossils record changes that living things undergo over millions of years Shared characteristics of parents and offspring Adaptation and evolution of animals and plants in order to survive in different habitats/how characteristics are acquired rather than inherited/natural selection How creatures change over long periods of time Sample Text: (Enter Giant Tortoise slowly) Narrator: (Sarcastically) In your own time! Giant Tortoise: Hey! No need to rush! And it’s not like I have any predators to run from. Narrator: Just as well! Have you had far to come? Giant Tortoise: I live on the Galapagos islands, off the South American coast. Narrator: Whoa! That’s a long way! Giant Tortoise: Not as far as Mr Darwin travelled on his five-year trip! Narrator: So, you met the great man? (Enter Finch) Finch: We certainly did! Took some of us home with him! (Enter Darwin) Darwin: (To Giant Tortoise and Finch) You got me thinking about (To Giant Tortoise) Different patterned shells (To Finch) Different shaped beaks. You see, these creatures were different on each island suggesting they had adapted to their immediate environment. Giant Tortoise & Finch: (Together) Fascinating! (Exit Giant Tortoise & Finch) Narrator: Shall we look at some other examples? Darwin: (Enthusiastically) Certainly! Music 3 Parade of the Charioteers (Enter Stag and Peacock, both strutting proudly across stage) Stag: Look at my fine antlers! (Looks at audience) Anyone want to take me on? Peacock: Huh! No need for any violence! Just look at my magnificent display (opens tail to full effect). Who could not be impressed with me? Narrator: (Thoughtfully) Hmm. They are rather winning features Stag: It’s called ‘survival of the fittest’! Peacock: You’ve gotta have what it takes you know!

Learn all about camouflage with this dynamic and animated PPT presentation. It’s a nonfiction resource full of information, photos, illustrations, videos, and fun facts. The presentation is designed for teachers, students, and parents. When it’s over, challenge the kids with some higher-level thinking activities devised to hone problem-solving skills. It works extremely well as an independent reading resource for iPads, iPhones, tablets, etc. The presentation can be read or viewed as an animated digital book. In this informative and engaging PowerPoint presentation you and your children will learn all about… What adaptations are Physical and behavioral adaptations with detailed examples of each Camouflage as a physical adaptation Two purposes of camouflage (to hide while searching for food; to hide to escape from becoming food). How camouflage evolved depending on the type of animal and its habitat Furry mammals employ different types of camouflage than aquatic ones. Four main types of camouflage adaptations Blending in or concealing Coloration – fur, scales, feathers, skin, etc. o Some animals change coloring depending on the seasons o Some can change their coloring quickly depending on their surroundings (chameleons, octopus, etc.) Disruptive coloration – stripes, spots, patterns, etc. Disguise, or appear like something else (walking stick, leafy sea dragon) Mimicry, some animals mimic different or more dangerous animals (some nonpoisonous snakes look like poisonous ones, some moths have designs on their backs that look like large eyes, etc.) Interesting facts and much more When the presentation is over have your kids expand on what they’ve learned with three higher-level thinking activities. The Cookie Jar Forensic Science Mystery-The Crime Scenario

The Cookie Jar Forensic Science Mystery-The Crime Scenario

Welcome to The Cookie Jar Mystery An exciting adventure in the world of forensic science! The Cookie Jar Mystery is a fun, forensic science mini-course consisting of six separate modules designed to engage middle school students. In Mrs. Johnson’s classroom, a curious crime has taken place: her favorite cookie jar has been broken and not surprisingly, some of her delicious, homemade cookies have been eaten! As a scientist and teacher, Mrs. Johnson realizes that this unfortunate incident provides a “teachable moment”—an opportunity to teach students how to use the tools of forensic science, understand the crime, and find the guilty party! In The Cookie Jar Mystery, instructors and students participate in the investigation, aided by the clues and developments in the case revealed in the ongoing story of Mrs. Johnson’s classroom. Although every module moves students closer to a final conclusion and the guilty suspect, each module is fully self-contained, providing a complete science module/lab, all of the activities and assessments to support student understanding, and an engaging chapter in the story of the crime. Module Structure in Five Easy Steps: Teaching Forensic Science Overview: Easy classroom set-up, list of materials to acquire, background information for the teacher, and learning objectives. More to the Story: Engaging Students:A stand-alone, read-aloud “chapter” in the ongoing story of the middle-school crime: the breaking of Mrs. Johnson’s cookie jar, the theft of cookies, and the pursuit of justice. Hands-On Activities: Experiments that range from developing observation skills to fingerprint detection, understanding DNA and much, much more! Data Collection and Analysis: Students develop a working theory of the crime by recording their experimental data on handy,activity-related “case notes”, then discussing their findings with their fellow classroom “detectives.” Assessment, Standards, and Extensions: Strategies on how to assess student understanding, procedures and content of each learning activity are included. A standards correlation sheet clearly demonstrates how The Cookie Jar Mystery’s activities meet national standards in Science and ELA. Module extensions, resources, and additional reading are recommended in each module. Each module contains a glossary of terms introduced. To kick off the series in Module 1: The Crime Scenario, students are introduced to the classroom caper through discovery of clues at the re-created crime scene. Students learn about the steps of the investigation, observation, and the identities of the four suspects in question. Each lesson comes with a complete supply list and all the handouts for each activity. Many of the supplies needed are found in most classrooms, other can be found at science suppliers and your local grocery store.

The Lie Tree Novel Study + STEAM BUNDLE

The Lie Tree Novel Study + STEAM BUNDLE

This resource is designed to be used during Reading Workshop and is to be used with The Lie Tree Novel Study by Frances Hardinge with a STEAM extension about designing and making an adapted organism. ABOUT THE NOVEL: Faith Sunderly leads a double life. To most people, she is reliable, dull, trustworthy—a proper young lady who knows her place as inferior to men—but inside, Faith is full of questions and curiosity, and she cannot resist a mystery: an unattended envelope, an unlocked door. She also knows secrets no one suspects her of knowing. For one, she knows that her family moved to the close-knit island of Vane because her famous scientist father was fleeing a reputation-destroying scandal. And when her father is discovered dead shortly thereafter, she knows that he was murdered. In pursuit of justice and revenge, Faith hunts through her father’s possessions and discovers a strange tree. The tree bears fruit only when she whispers a lie to it, and when that fruit is eaten, it delivers a hidden truth. But while the tree might hold the key to her father’s murder, it could also lure his murderer directly to Faith. **ABOUT THE RESOURCE: **Designed in alignment with the 2014 National Curriculum of England’s reading objectives for Year 6, the pack includes: Chapter Summaries, Comprehension Questions, Digging Deeper Opportunities (includes character studies and plot studies), Creative Writing Tasks, Non-Fiction Tasks related to content of the novel (fossils, sea caves, The Origin of the Species, mermaids), and a STEAM enrichment activity where children design, make, and evaluate their own adapted insect according to Key Stage 2 Science, Art and Design, and Design Technology objectives. Resource is provided as a PDF but a digital copy of the pack is available for editing and sharing on Google Classroom and Seesaw available with download.
