This culminating activity brings all the overall expectations of the grade 10 applied mathematics course (MFM2P) together in an action-packed story line! Students help the young mathematically-inclined warrior Zachary rescue the kidnapped Princess Eva by applying their knowledge of trigonometry, proportional reasoning, linear relations & systems, quadratic relations, simple trinomial factoring, and 3D measurement. Will Princess Eva be rescued? Will the Warrior Zachary muster the math power to save the day? Have your students mastered the grade 10 applied mathematics curriculum?? ...this task will be the determining factor! INCLUDED: .docx and .pdf format of the assignment AND the complete answer key

Colouring by Trigonometry - SohCahToa Giraffe, Collaborative Mosaic (28, 8, and 4 sheet versions)

Highly Engaging! My students volunteered to complete extra sheets! You get two full class set of 28 worksheets that come together to make the giraffe mosaic in both a word-problem format, and in the recently added diagrams-version! PLUS I've added 'small group' versions for 4 or 8 students, making the task very flexible to various class sizes. Each worksheet represents a small section of the big picture! The end result will look spectacular hanging up in your classroom :) Students use the basic trig ratios (sin, cos, tan) to solve for sides and angles, then use the answers to colour their worksheets based on the colour key. So much cooler than textbook homework! It's Simple: 1. Calculate the answers. 2. Colour the squares. 3. Cut out your section. 4. Combine with the class! INCLUDED (.docx and .pdf of everything): --> Full class set of 28 worksheets (all different!) that combine to create the Giraffe mosaic. --> Full sets for both the 4-worksheet and 8-worksheet versions. (More of a traditional colour-by-number style.... look at the preview) --> A Teaching Tips page to help you implement this task smoothly -->Worksheets involve a range of right trigonometry problems that involve choosing and/or applying the correct primary trig ratio to solve for an unknown side or angle. --> Master Answer Key showing both the colour and numeric solution for all worksheet problems for the 28-student version, and the colour key with answer-ranges for the small-group versions. Teaching Tip: Have students draw a right triangle and label the given information as they read each problem. The student buy-in factor is HUGE with these worksheets; they all want to see the finished picture come together! High school students love colouring too! This sure beats textbook homework! Imagine if your students were the ones policing homework completion? "Common Josh! Do your work or we'll have a hole in our picture!" Leave the picture a secret or show it for motivation… it’s your call. Encourage students to check their answers by finding them in the randomized list on their worksheet before they colour each square. This will increase the accuracy of the final picture! All my “Colouring by…” worksheets use standard pencil-crayon colours found in the Crayola 24 pack. For best results, use the exact colour name match (and encourage quality colouring!). Perhaps a class set of pencil crayons would be a fun math department investment! Thanks for checking this out! ~CalfordMath

Colouring by Mean, Median, and Mode - Lego Robin (12 and 20 Sheet Math Mosaics)

(0)
This task falls right in the middle of Awesome, Fun, and Math! Students each work independently on their own worksheet, solving for the mean, median or mode for a given list of values, yet they work collaboratively to create a whole-class Lego Robin mosaic when the work is all done! Every worksheet has a unique set of problems, yet follows the same order of problem-type! You can confidently have students work together without cheating. Expect to hear good peer-to-peer math conversation and teaching. Math Involved: • Calculate mean value - includes negative values in the list • Determine the median value - includes cases with both odd and even number of values, (requiring students to average the two middle values). Students must first order the values (good integer practice.) • Determine the Mode - All sets of values are unimodal (no bimodal, or no mode cases, etc.) • All answers, and values in the lists, are integers INCLUDED: • pdf and docx file versions of the class sets of the 12 and 20- worksheets/colouring grids • Complete answer keys giving the colour and numeric answer for all problems on every worksheet. • Students' worksheets have a randomized answer list at the bottom so they can monitor their own understanding. • A Teaching Tips page, for smooth implementation of this task The student buy-in factor is HUGE with these worksheets Encourage students to check their answers by finding them in the randomized list on their worksheet before they colour each square. All my “Colouring by…” worksheets use standard pencil-crayon colours found in the Crayola 24 pack. For best results, use the exact colour name match (and encourage quality colouring!). Angle Tangle Spiderweb - Solving for angles with SohCahToa

(0)
A triggy web of SohCahToa fun! Students must use sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to determine unknown acute angle measures. Each angle’s letter corresponds to an answer below, helping to solve the riddle, “What did one spider say to another?” INCLUDED: -> PDF (.pdf) -> Colourful handout with instructions -> Answer key / Solution This activity is a good compliment to my Trig Treasure Map (which focuses on calculating side lengths), building the core skill of selecting and using the appropriate trig ratio. This prepares students for the next step of applying this knowledge to real life applications. It’s perfect for Grade 10 Academic or Applied students (Ontario curriculum: MPM2D, MFM2P) This is more fun than a straight boring worksheet… it has corny joke! The triangles are set up to ensure all three trig ratios are required, but in some cases, basic interior angle properties could be employed as well. The final “!”-labelled angle requires some careful thought… Enjoy! ~ CalfordMath CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.SRT.C.8 Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.

Colouring by Multiplication - Classic Mario (Products up to 144)

This is a solo student colouring mosaic (as opposed to a collaborative math mosaic). Students will gain familiarity with plenty of single digit multiplication products, some 2-digit x 1-digit (and sometimes a 1 x big number randomly). This task gives some great motivation to work through a bunch of multiplication facts, since the picture only takes shape when all the squares are correctly coloured.
