Dyson Cards Science Product Design Engineering Centripetal Force

Pupils' love being creative with this hands-on project. Students are tasked with creating a centripetal mini 'vortex' using a waste plastic bottle, glitter and washing-up liquid. In this first lesson, students are introduced to sustainability, up-cycling and centripetal force as well as the work of James Dyson. Students familiarise themselves with the keywords; before applying their understanding in the practical task which can be done in a group or individually. The lesson has strong cross-curricular links, particularly with Science. Starter Activity Class discussion/individual tasks Practical (bottle) Consolidation task Lesson is planned as a double (90/120 minutes) If you enjoyed this lesson, please see the other lessons in this or other Product Design series/SOW (where the full iterative design process is covered). In this unit, pupils will gain an understanding into the importance of sustainability with applied practical Science in Product Design.

Dyson Cards Science Product Design Engineering Spaghetti Bridges

Pupils' love being creative with this hands-on project. Students are tasked with creating bridge structure out of dry spaghetti with tape and rubber bands. In this first lesson, students are introduced compression and tension as well as the work of Brunel and in particular the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Students familiarise themselves with the keywords; structure, compression and tension before applying their understanding in the practical task which can be done in group or individually. The lesson has strong cross-curricular links, particularly with Science. Starter Activity Class discussion/individual tasks Practical (bridge building) Lesson is planned as a double (90/120 minutes) If you enjoyed this lesson, please see the other lessons in this or other Product Design series/SOW (where the full iterative design process is covered). In this unit, pupils will gain an understanding into what is product design and the creative process of a designer, from initial ideas, final isometric sketching, writing a specification and clay model making (prototyping).

Differentiation: Homework Challenge

Homework challenge has been developed to differentiate homework tasks to give students choice, encourage engagement and differentiate homework for all abilities. Students are given a homework topic – this might be famous designers in DT, World War 1 in History or To Kill a Mockingbird in English. The student then decides how they would prefer to complete their homework. They research the topic (or already have some understanding of it from a previous lesson) and display their knowledge in one of the twenty different methods listed on the Homework Challenge sheet. The challenges are split into 3 different categories of easy, medium and hard (A,B,C). The challenges in the ‘Junior Designer’ category take less time to complete and are a little easier, whereas the ‘Creative Director’ challenges take much longer to complete and are slightly more difficult. Students complete their chosen challenge, hand it into the teacher (sometimes performing it to the rest of the class if they wish) and the teacher gets a wide variety of creative homework’s that are all about the same topic! You may decide to reward students based upon the level of challenge they choose (e.g. a postcard home if they complete a ‘Creative Director’ challenge). -PDF and editable PowerPoint document. ** This resource has taken a lot of time to develop and produce. Design Technology: Consumer Profile Cards

Fed up of pupils designing for themselves when answering design briefs?- Consumer Profile cards have been designed to solve this issue. Each card is written purposely in a paragraph so that students can use the information, like a reading comprehension, to dissect the important facts that they need to know. This will show a detailed understanding. The cards include a range of people that have a variety of likes, needs and wants. This encourages students to choose a suitable consumer that is relevant to the problem that they have been asked to solve. (For example, if the problem is to design a product to help the elderly, then the Baby consumer profile card would not be suitable – Students should be expected to work this out after class discussion). - Cards should be printed on A3 card and laminated. - Print straight from a PDF or edit text to suit you via PowerPoint. ** This resource has taken a lot of time to develop and produce.
