Freedom City Comics presents snapshots of the history of civil rights and politics on Tyneside. Each chapter focuses on a different era of the history of people and events in Newcastle and the North East. In addition to the free 16-page comic (https://research.ncl.ac.uk/fccomics/readthecomic/), we’ve worked with teachers to make this learning framework for KS2 and KS3. All the activities are designed as springboards for your own projects, lessons, and activities. A 7 hour KS3 ‘Introduction to Citizenship’ Unit. The unit covers what exactly citizenship is, how our government system works in the UK, how the law affects young people, how we can be active citizens, human rights, different forms of government and immigration. This unit was originally used as the first unit the Year 7s would take in Citizenship, but has since been added to and improved. The original written unit plan is included and everything is entirely editable too. This includes 7 x 1 hour PowerPoints, dozens of worksheets and clips clips, well differentiated activities and engaging tasks. Useful for PSHCE / Citizenship or British Values. New assembly resource from the Rethinking Security Group in collaboration with UKS2 teacher Karenza Mahtani. The assembly introduces the concept of security from an individual, societal and global perspective. It encourages children to think about what the causes of insecurity could be - such as poverty, injustice and climate change - and to understand that there are positive ways of building a safer, more secure world. The resource is participatory and seeks to empower children to process for themselves what security means and what priorities for building security could be. It ends with an invite for children to take part in a competition that will engage and platform their views on security (deadline for competition is October 1st, 2018).

SMSC 'responsibility' lesson - literacy diary writing - core values/learning behaviours - Year 6

This differentiated SMSC/Literacy lesson plan focusses on the theme of ‘Responsibility’ (a key learning behaviour and a core value for many schools) and is aimed at Year 6 children but could be adapted for other year groups. The learning objective is: Explain the consequences of being responsible and irresponsible. Children will do this through activities including discussion and through writing two contrasting diary entries. The lesson includes success criteria, a pair work starter, a written activity with a detailed model (which explains how to model write the example given so that pupils are able to contribute to both content and vocabulary), resources for three-way differentiation and resources for the reflective plenary. I have not been observed teaching this particular lesson but in all recent observations I have been graded Outstanding.
