Pokemon style bug inspectors (Alternative Education)

This resource has been created with hard to reach young people in mind. These resources have been used at The Island Project as part of vocational learning as a way of engaging young people who struggled with ADHD, Autism, SEMH and challenging behaviour. Most learners who attend our project are also struggling academically and therefore these materials are designed to allow tutors to scale the difficultly as desired. Differentiation is essential naturally with all sessions geared towards alternative learning for this criterion of young people. This project has been particularly successful when embedded with gardening sessions, ICT sessions as well as social skills building sessions. The idea behind this session plan is to encourage young people to explore and role play (optional) in an adventure just like Ash Ketchum the main character in the popular Pokemon series. Exploring the nearby nature find bugs and catch them with the intention of observing them and making key comparisons against Pokemon. Worksheets involve making posters and creating your own Pokedex to record your findings. Additonal challenges encourage young people to go above and beyond to achieve extra rewards. The beauty is not all young people have to enjoy Pokemon to engage in this session, being interested in bugs, mini beasts and insects in general is also perfect! This session will embed being outdoors, writing opportunities, computer skills development, research skills as well as social interaction.

Play doh therapy - complete programme

This is a complete programme of activities for children from yr 1 to yr 7. The activities cover a range of skills including speech and language, communication, social, fine motor and more. The programme is split into 5 stages and can be delivered 1:1 or in small groups. The programme is not linear and different stages can be used at different times depending on the age and the ability of the children it is being used with. Staff using the programme can set their own time frame for the length of each session and the duration of the programme. A full description of each activity is included and extension activities are also included as is an assessment sheet. Time will, initially, be needed to set up your play doh therapy pack ( printing and laminating ) but once a pack is created it can be used over and over again. A considerable amount of time has gone into this resource and I would be grateful if my work is acknowledged when used.

The information in this handbook has been researched from a number of online sources as well as from my personal experience of being a Learning Support Assistant since 2014 for children aged 11-18yrs.

This SEMH Questionnaire looks at five strands: Identity, Friendships, Communication, Body Language and Leadership. This questionnaire enables professionals to have an insight in to the emotional wellbeing of pupils. Additionally, it’s a great tool for monitoring and tracking social and emotional progress and development. It is best used pre-intervention and then post-intervention in order to identify if any progress has been made. My Street - Story for students with learning difficulties. An all inclusive story.

I have outlined a couple of key features in the book. • I have given each character a name that starts with a different letter – student who sign can learn the signs for each character and recognise the letter for each. • I have numbered the houses from 1 to 10 giving students the opportunity to count, count out objects (maybe houses). • I have given each house a different colour so that students could be asked questions about colour of house. • I have given each character different colour clothes so that students can be asked about colour of clothes. • I have made the drawings simple and tried to make each character different – colour/style of hair etc so that students can comment on who that character is. • Each page contains a line/verse that has the same syllables/structure. I find students with special needs like the rhythm and structure of a book and can become engaged by this. I have found ‘Call and Response’ method of reading for students particularly engaging for vocal and non-vocal students. Read the line, then students (with staff) to read the same line. Sign each line which is good for non-vocal and vocal students also as they learn signs with repetition of each verse. • The book contains answer cards which I would like teachers/parents/guardians to cut out laminate and stick to answer laminate boards. Again very simple but give students the ability to comment on the following questions.  What is the colour of Luke’s house?  What colour is Hope’s clothes?  What number house does Max live in?  What does Tal like doing?  Who lives in house number 3?  Who likes playing football?  Use sentence strips to create short sentences ‘Tal lives in number 2’. ‘Tal likes to drum’. Students who are able to write can copy these sentences. • The concept of ‘he’ and ‘she’ can be difficult for some students and this can be discussed also ‘What does he like to do?’ etc. • Activities are so important for students with special needs and these characters are all doing activities that can be accessed by students during their lessons and using their experiences to engage and comment – experience activity, take photos include in literacy lessons etc.

This bundle contains 6 project plans and is aimed at giving young people the opportunity of learning about Ancient Egypt in a less academic way through more hands on activities using arts and crafts, social play, woodwork, Lego and more. This range of sessions was delivered over a 6 week half term, each session being focused on per week.

Victorian Crime and Jack the Ripper ENTIRE SCHEME and RESOURCES

This scheme of work was originally made for a SEN group but has since been differentiated for KS3 and taught at year 8 and year 9 to a range of abilities. Though it suits lower to mid for some activities, most lessons are easily adaptable to suit a higher ability class - particularly the Jack the Ripper case file section at the end. It has lessons on the history of Victorian Crime and Punishment, covering topics such as the Queen, the bloody code, Sweeney Todd (truth/fiction), Robert Peel, and the development of new detection methods (such as: finger prints and mugshots). Some a bit creepy or gory, so know your audience! Finally at the end is a case study of Jack the Ripper, which uses a range of original sources and offers students the chance to deduce who they think Jack was based on several possible suspects. This is themed around Sherlock Holmes for fun. There are over 200 slides and all worksheets are included. This has been a popular unit for several years at my school. There are notes on how to apply each worksheet and most slides have explanations. I’ve spent a long time developing this and the vast majority is my own work - I hope you and your students enjoy it!
