Contemporary Issues in South Africa (Water Crisis & Unemployment)

Lesson on the contemporary issues of the Water Crisis and Unemployment in South Africa. The lesson starts by analysing headlines from/about South Africa and a class discussion, followed by identification of causes and consequences of the South Africa Water Crisis. Students then come up with potential solutions to the water crisis. The issue of unemployment in South Africa is explored with causes and consequences identified. Solutions are identified and students write a persuasive speech about the solution they think is best for South Africa. Full lesson is included, with links to videos and articles within the slides. Handouts are included at the end of the slideshow for printing and giving to students. This lesson takes around 2x 1 hour lessons.

The lesson discusses what persecution is, different forms of religious persecution and then students research different examples of persecution of multiple religions around the world. This culminates in a class debate. Full lesson is included, with links to videos and articles within the slides. The Role of Civil Society in Promoting International Mindedness

Lesson looking at how Civil Society promotes international Mindedness. The lesson identifies what Civil Society and International Mindedness is and uses the case studies of the Pro-Democracy Protests in Hong Kong and the Arab Spring. Created for DP Geography (2019) HL Unit 5 ‘Human Development & Diversity’, but easily adaptable to other year groups and curriculums. Full lesson is included, with some handouts (included seperately) used. Students had a digital copy of the ‘resources file’ (which has some answers and animations removed and additional space to make notes) to take notes as required.

Gandhi and the Caste System

This lesson is designed to be adaptable to the needs of your class. It can build on previous knowledge of Gandhi, and works best if that is the case, but can also be used as an introduction to Gandhi’s teaching and life. (To this end, I’ve included a link of him burning the passes and his famous non violence speech that followed it, which are both short and excellent insights into his teaching and philosophy. On non violence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKzKj_8CO2g Burning of the passes (ahimsa):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50gNryy9JnA) It includes extension tasks for able and talented, and differentiated activities including ethical dilemmas, youtube videos, group discussions, treasure hunts as well as written tasks. A broad range of activities, in my experience, always bosters engagement. (there is a need to print 10 slides here) The lesson aims to remind students’ of Gandhi’s teachings and inform them of the Caste system. There is also a short video about Narayanan Krishnan, an inspirational Hindu who has disregarded his Brahmin caste to help untouchables or down and outs in Indian Society. 2 differently worded Learning Objectives here for lower and higher ability or age groups: To remember who Gandhi was. to explain what the caste system was. To know Gandhi’s opinion of the untouchables. To develop and evaluate my own opinion about the caste system. To empathise with people who are in the caste system. Or, for KS4, All will be able to explain what the caste system was, and why Gandhi was against it. Most will be able to relate the situation to contemporary issues re: jobs and status. Some will be able to explain why the caste system became a source of prejudice and discrimination.

This hand-drawn illustration of the Sand Cat is a great way to stir interest within children for endangered animals. Colouring in is a symbolic way to give endangered species significance and worth. Children will naturally be curious to find out more, or this sheet could form part of a project to learn why this animal is declining in the wild? Sand Cats are found in the North African and Middle Eastern deserts, where the roam across the desert mostly at night using their fur as camouflage. Sadly their habitat is being lost and they are hunted both for their furs, as well as for sport, hence their near threatened status. Colouring is a perfect means of relaxation, as well as a great tool for teaching colour, texture and of course, imagination.

An assembly focusing on the dangers of fake news, how we recognise fake news and the importance of being aware of it. The assembly explores the fact that it was Hitler who invented the idea of fake news and then examines how he used it to gain power and control the public, before comparing it to the way politicians use fake news today. There are then slides which explore how to recognise fake news and what to do if you’re unsure. The slides shown are just a sample of those included. The whole assembly follows an easy narrative that can be used with no additional prep (although it is also editable should you want to). Best suited for secondary students. Could be used for activities week in Humanities or just as a reward lesson the last time you see your class for the summer. Very easy to set up - you will just need a few balloons, string, sellotape, old clothes, felt tips and a any other boxes/construction materials you can find (just things that would usually be thrown in the recycling). The students work in small groups to research and recreate a famous political icon (info sheets and clip tasks included - all instructions on Powerpoint). The lesson can last as long as you want it to, and I gave prizes of sweets at the end for the best one - but that’s optional! My students really enjoyed it and we took pictures at the end for the school website. Hopefully yours will love it too. I’m going to be adding lots more free PSHCE lessons over the coming months. For Citizenship, aims to challenge students pre-conceptions about terrorism and those who perpetrate acts of terrorism. Also challenges stereotypes and may lead into discussions about the nature of religion and how it can be used negatively to perpetrate acts of violence. It can also serve as the basis for a wider discussion about how people who are demonised (e.g. as terrorists) can be rehabilitated and serve a useful function in society.

This set of videos was produced for the OHCHR - Office of the High Commisioner for Human Rights and designed to appeal to 15 to 25 year-olds who were starting to engage with civil society. They are designed to provoke discussion about Human Rights and explain the role the UN plays in protecting those rights.
