#### Logic & problem-solving saves wise man

An evil Emperor kidnapped the wisest man in the kingdom and said he was to be put to death. His family pleaded for his life, so the Emperor decided to have some evil fun and give the wise man a chance. The wise man is given 12 pills; 11 are poison and one is safe. The pills are identical except the safe one has a slightly differently weight. He is also given a balance on which he can weigh them. He can only make 3 weighings then he has to take one of the pills. Designed for G&T years 9/10 this calls on all their logic and problem-solving skills. Ideally placed for collaborative working, where trial-and-error tests their ability to be wrong and yet try again. From a teaching perspective this is a real, practical, maths task, where the use of props such as Smarties or Tic-Tacs makes it more realistic than the static pencil and paper - or if you have access to some sort of ‘pod’, like those inside Kinder eggs, it’s very simple to make one slightly heavier than the rest to really bring it to life. We Solve Problems is a charity, founded by three PhD mathematicians, whose aim is to promote the use of advanced mathematics within secondary schools. We want to encourage creative mathematical thinking, to develop a skill within pupils for presenting their results clearly and coherently, as well as promoting personal problem-solving skills. Visit us at wesolveproblems.org.uk. We would very much appreciate it if you could take time to follow us, and hopefully review this resource as well, as this helps others to find us. Thank you.

Classroom teachers and remedial teachers will find this book to be a valuable mathematical resource. Activities can be used as early finisher tasks, whole class lessons, practice and consolidation tasks or as small group challenges. All activities are linked to relevant mathematics outcomes. Mathematical Reasoning contains sections covering logical reasoning, equations, Venn diagrams and other problem solving strategies. Also included are challenging games and activities that explore a variety of mathematical concepts that are based on versions of popular everyday games such as Dominoes, Bingo and calculator activities. #### Mathematics Decision 1 Lessons

This is a set of lessons for Decision Mathematics. The resources include Powerpoints and worksheets. Powerpoint include: Learning objectives Examples animated at each step to support explanations and independent learning Important information written in red boxes to scaffold learning. Worksheets include examples on a word document for students to write on. Topics: Spanning Trees Linear Programming Dijkstra’s Algorithm Chinese Postman Problem Travelling Salesman Problem Matching Sorting Algorithms Graph Theory I hope you enjoy these lessons, where they can be used in the following ways: To deliver a course with reduced planning but not reducing quality of the lesson, as this course can be time consuming writing and preparing examples, where this resource can help. As a basis for an observation lesson to save time preparing resources. To give to students for out of lesson learning. To support teachers who are new to this topic, again to reduce planning time.

#### Start of year classroom introduction. 'There is no talent'

A presentation I like to use when i'm introducing myself to a class at the beginning of the year. The powerpoint focuses on three people Andrew Wiles Matthew Syed Conor McGregor. In summary, I focus on how there is no such thing as talent and that hard work is what gets results in mathematics (or anything in life really). I refer to the three people using the side notes in the powerpoint provided. Please feel free to download, share and express improvements that could be made for the presentation. Thanks Cookie.

#### Sudoku

These resources introduce Sudoku to children through simple colour Sudoku puzzles. This activity can be developed as a challenge to create their own colour Sudoku grids. The children can use resources such as coloured cubes or pegs to try out different permutations while they get themselves started. This download also has resources to progress and build upon the Sudoku Colour resource. Instead of using colours to complete the grid, children use just 3 numbers to create a 3x3 Sudoku grid. The grids then become more complex up to a 9 3X3 grid which also has the solutions! There are blank grids for the children to create their own puzzles. Great fun.
