Sentence Writing Frames - High Frequency Words and 'a' or 'an' Bundle

Sentence Writing Frames - High Frequency Words and 'a' or 'an' Bundle

This resource contains a set of 26 high-frequency word and 'a' or 'an'writing frames. It also contains sentence writing sheets for the construction of sentences. These frames are a particularly useful resource for students who struggle to master the basics of writing. It provides a framework and scaffolding for pupils to achieve some success in creating sentences independently. Writing sentences and reading them back helps pupils to embed and consolidate high-frequency words which they will then be able to use freely in their writing. It is particularly appropriate for SEN students who find reading and writing challenging. The support of the frame makes sentence writing accessible and gives pupils a feeling of confidence - that they can do it! Often the key to success in getting pupils to write is giving them self-confidence. I have used these frames successfully over many years to get older SEN students motivated to read and write independently. The frames can be laminated and used time and time again. Phonics Phase 1 - Guess the sound game

Phonics Phase 1 - Guess the sound game

This Smartnote activity is designed for Nursery class or Preschool children. On the top of the screen there are sound buttons, underneath them there are pictures of objects. By clicking the speaker sign at the left bottom corner of the sound button a sound will come on. The children match the sounds to the objects. Using the pen tool a line can be drawn from the sound button to the matching picture. (If the sound is too loud or goes on for too long it can be stopped by clicking the speaker icon again.) This is a fun activity for starting Circle or Group Time. Afterwards the children can be encouraged to listen to the different sounds in their environment.

Use a hyphen to create a compound adjective - fun dice game: 'Creepy compound adjective creator'

Use a hyphen to create a compound adjective - fun dice game: 'Creepy compound adjective creator'

Assessment focus I can use a hyphen to combine words and create compound adjectives. Explanation Children need to understand how hyphens can be used to avoid ambiguity (e.g. man eating shark versus man-eating shark, or recover versus re-cover). Also, an understanding of hyphens can add descriptive depth to noun phrases (e.g. the creature) when they are used to form compound adjectives (the ferocious-looking creature). In the compound adjective ‘ferocious-looking’, the hyphen shows that the two component words have a combined meaning. Aim: using the ‘dice guide’, roll to create six compound adjectives with hyphens that you could use before a noun (e.g. muddle-headed monster). Write definitions for your compound adjectives on your ‘game card’. Keep unusual or ridiculous combinations too! Have fun playing with words!
