Triangles reasoning starter

This can be used as a starter activity where students simply count how many triangles they can see. It can also be used as a longer activity where you give each student the worksheet containing 8 blank diagrams and they can shade on how many triangles they can see. They can also name the triangles and label properties of the shapes, such as equal sides or right angles. Finally it can be used as an investigation where you ask students to justify how they know what type of triangle it is using the properties of the shape. They can also discuss lines of symmetry and calculate the area of some of the triangles.

A great reinforcement exercise or you can give a sheet to a bright pupil to keep them occupied. You can use your professional judgement to choose the appropriate sheet. Answer sheets are provided for all worksheets. Remember, all schools are different so you will have to adapt my materials to suit your school. It’s not a silver bullet, but should save you lots of time as you can cut and paste. Great for N.Q.T.'s and experienced alike.

This is a complete set of planning for the whole year. It follows the White Rose maths small steps and guidance and makes direct reference to them. It also makes direct reference to the Interim Framework (2018) to ensure that evidence can be collected alongside. I have also included my Interim Framework SMART/PPT and workbooks. I use this as Summer Block 2 just before SATs as revision and evidence gathering. I have also included an element of continuous provision (especially Autumn term plans where the activities are intended to be more fluid) as this is how I deliver the curriculum, this may not suit everyone. Many students tend to do well with the computational components of mathematics. Unfortunately, the same pupils tend to have difficulty with thoroughly explaining how they solved the problems in written form. As educators, we know that students being able to explain their solution processes are a crucial component to long-term retention of the mathematical concepts they need to succeed in numeracy mastery. This mini unit deals with classifying triangles by angle measurement. This study provides a week-long lesson that incorporates multiple opportunities for your students to solve real-world problems computationally. Then, it requires that they explain their solution process in both an oral (Accountable Talk), and a written (Brief Constructed Response) format. Within these responses, the students are encouraged to use logical thinking to PROVE or JUSTIFY (Higher Level Bloom’s Taxonomy Components) their solution processes. This action enables the student to think about the steps they took to get to the answer-a process that has been proven to enhance student retention of relevant skills in mathematics. Lastly, the students are required to complete a Student Self-Assessment. This part of the unit is also crucial to student interpretation and retention of the solution process because it needs them to think about their form of thinking and be accountable to what is involved in effectively solving a word problem.
