OUTSTANDING lesson on sustainability and conservation of the biosphere.

OUTSTANDING lesson on sustainability and conservation of the biosphere.

This lesson was created for a Year 10 group to recapture their love of the planet to enable them to think about Geography in a less separate way and encouraged them to generate solutions whilst teaching them about sustainability and conservation. It is a lesson where the students are in control and much of the discussion is for you to facilitate and them to discover among themselves. I found it really energised the group to learning more in depth about different ecosystems and encouraged them to think about their own role in society locally and their global impact. I ended the lesson by playing from 1.16.00 of the HOME youtube video (which every geography should watch!) and it worked amazingly well. Enjoy.

'Who's chopping down the TRF and why?' - Rainforest GCSE causes of deforestation

'Who's chopping down the TRF and why?' - Rainforest GCSE causes of deforestation

Originally made for Edexcel B GCSE Geog- Batte for the Biosphere topic but can be applied to any syllabus teaching about the causes of deforestation. The students really enjoyed the lesson as it is very balanced between discussion and exam prep- suits a mixed ability group well and there's lots of room for creative higher level thinking. The lesson gets students to first of all think about the connection between a beef burger and the rainforest and then gets the students to discuss the various causes of deforestation through peer teaching of 3 different articles. There is a describe/explain answer builder sheet which worked well with low ability students and the articles can be differentiated when they are initially given out. There is also an exam question and sample answer for the students to then use to create their own. There's discussion of indigenous tribes living sustainably in the TRF through a brillian TED talk and ends with a quick MEAT the facts video which gets students to understand the links between deforestation and our meat appetite in economically developed nations.

GCSE 9-1; Ecosystems - coral reef location, structure and nutrient cycling

GCSE 9-1; Ecosystems - coral reef location, structure and nutrient cycling

In this lesson students will be introduced to the location and names of reefs around the world. A writing frame is then provided for them to use to write a description of the location of coral reefs. Next there are a series of photos of reefs and of a visit to the Great Barrier Reef to create a sense of place. After that students are introduced to the structure of a coral polyp and zooxanthellae. On the next slide are a series of statements about nutrient cycling on a coral reef. Students are required to work as a team on flipchart paper to turn these into a nutrient cycling diagram. They can then refine their ideas into a simple diagram in their books. Pupils are then asked to consider how such a large biodiversity is maintained in a low nutrient environment. Finally there is a quiz with answers to use as a plenary. All resources are included at the end of the PowerPoint.

GCSE 9-1; Ecosystems - managing rainforests (Surui carbon project and sustainable agroforestry)

GCSE 9-1; Ecosystems - managing rainforests (Surui carbon project and sustainable agroforestry)

This lesson is part of a series of lessons about the rainforest ecosystem and is available as part of a bundle. This lesson starts by recalling some of the threats to the rainforest. It then introduces the idea of shifting cultivation and how it is sustainable. Next there are a series of photos of reasons for deforestation e.g. logging, mining, ranching, faming. Students are asked to consider why this is not sustainable and why it would be difficult to regrow the forest. they are then introduced to two schemes designed to manage the rainforest the Surui carbon project and sustainable agroforestry. Firstly, they should read through the articles about one of the projects. then in a group of four should simplify the project into a mind map. The groups can then present their findings to each other. Next they are asked to simplify each project into a PEE paragraph. Finally, students should work as a group to consider the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two projects and evaluate which is most successful. All resources are included at the end of the PowerPoint.
