How many tiles for a given area. Decimal division required. Answers included

Suitable for year 6. Dimensions of the wall and tile are given. Decimal multiplication is needed to work out the areas of both. The children need to use decimal division to work out number of tiles. Second question requires them to cost the job using a given, simple hourly rate. Very often, with multi step problems, the children have forgotten to go back to the question and make sure they have worked it through to the end…hence the worksheet. I have hand written the answers as I find this helps them , when they are checking their work . Some of my children are very reluctant to commit pencil to paper but I find that if they see some examples, they realise they can work the answer faster if they are writing down the steps. SATs preparation for 2018. These topic-focused SATs questions have fully-worked solutions suitable for whiteboard display or sending home to parents. Note that the methods in my solutions are not restricted to standard multiplication and division techniques - if the multiplication or division is difficult I have often used an intuitive method to obtain the answer. Students can use whatever method they want - as long as they show sufficient working out.<hr>I have designed this compilation to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’! KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). How many slabs are needed for an irregular area

Given a diagram of a simple irregular area, the children have to work out how many 20 cm square slabs would be required. They know how many are in a box and the cost of each box, however, there is a 20% reduction - they must work out the cost. The worksheet requires them to also use their knowledge of decimal division in order to work out the number of slabs required. The worksheet is typed but the explanation / answer sheet is handwritten, so they can, hopefully see how they should set out the workings for this multi step problem. I’d be very grateful for any feedback…good or bad! Thanks
