What are the key vulnerable or target groups? 2- Do any individuals have specific additional needs or disabilities? 3- Explore any issues arising in regards to behaviour within the class. Are there any specific individuals or needs you need to be aware of? 4- Gather information in regards to current academic standards. How do these pupils need to be challenged? 5- What do I need to teach as a priority in my first few weeks? What gaps in learning need to be addressed? There will be many more issues you would probably also like to explore. However, if you use these key areas as an initial scaffold to your conversations, you should feel confident that you are ready to receive your new groups of students. Check out this awesome student-friendly inventory to gain insight into the culture in your classroom. This assessment of culture includes 20 questions that students respond with a smiling emojiy, straight faced emoji or a frowning emoji based on how much they agree or disagree with the statements. There are then seven short answer questions. These 27 questions will allow the teacher to understand what the students are feeling and how they erceive themselves in the grand scheme of the classroom as well as their relationship with the teacher. It can be implemented as regularly as possible in order to reflect and adapt based on student responses.
