Colour Count 2D Shapes Activity Cards - EYFS/Reception/Year 1

This resource relates to counting 2D shapes of different colours. It is a 3-in-1 product that covers the early learning of colours, shapes and basic counting up to 10. Each page contains the same shapes but they are different colours. An ideal resource for children to practise colour recognition and 2D shapes and counting. Ideally, each sheet should be laminated and used with a dry-erase pen. The child count the shapes that are the same colour and then write the number in the space provided. Shapes used are: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond/rhombus and pentagon. <strong>Extension opportunity:</strong> Some children can count beyond 10 and even 20 in Reception and Year 1, so once they have written down the number of shapes that are the same colours, they can then add the two numbers together to find the total number of, e.g., squares. There are two versions, one with more answers given, and this could be given in class or as a homework task depending on the support required. Area of rectilinear shapes

A complete lesson on area of rectilinear shapes, with a strong problem solving and creative element. Activities included: Starter: See cover slide - a prompt to think about properties of shapes, in part to lead to a definition of rectilinear polygons. Main: A question for pupils to discuss, considering which of two methods gives the correct answer for the area of an L-shape. A worksheet showing another L-shape, 6 times with 6 different sums. Pupils try to figure out the method used from the sum. A second worksheet that is really hard to describe but involves pupils thinking critically about how the area of increasingly intricate rectilinear shapes can have the same area. This sets pupils up to go on to create their own interesting shapes with the same area, by generalising about the necessary conditions for this to happen, and ways to achieve this (without counting all the squares!) A third worksheet with more conventional area questions, that could be used as a low-stakes test or a homework. Most questions have the potential to be done in more than one way, so could also be used to get pupils discussing and comparing methods. Plenary: A final question of sorts, where pupils have to identify the information sufficient to work out the area of a given rectilinear shape. Printable worksheets and answers included. A revision activity that can be used for KS3 or foundation GCSE pupils. Can be implemented in lots of ways. I ask pupils to get into pairs, take turns rolling two dice to form a co-ordinate and attempt to solve the corresponding question. Pupil put their initials on problems they have solved and after 30-45 minutes stop and count who has solved the most. Very engaging for year 10 and 11 foundation GCSE pupils. My 2-D Shape Mat in colour and b/w. (x2)</strong> 2-D shape mat contains all the shapes the children will be using in their activities. The mat is also needed for the 2-D quiz. There are 8 questions to be answered. <strong>2. Differentiated 2-D Shapes Search and Colour (x5).</strong> Children colour the shapes using the colour key. <strong>3. 2-D Shapes Search + Answer Sheet.</strong> There are five questions on this worksheet. Children refer to the shapes below which shows a variety of 2-D shapes inside two circles. Questions asked, e.g., ‘How many [triangles] do you see? <strong>4. 2-D Shape Pictures (x7).</strong> Seven 2-D shape pictures with colour key to be completed with the correct colours according to the colour key. The pictures are: - a house; rocket; cat; head with a hat; fish; face; and trees. <strong>5. 2-D Shape Robot - 6 Questions and Answer Sheet.</strong> This worksheet has a picture of a robot together with six questions for the children to answer. As an extension for the more able children, when they count the shapes they can also include the colour of the shape, e.g. ‘How many triangles can you see?��� The more able children can write ‘1 triangle which is a red hat.’ <strong> 6. Count and Colour 2-D Shape worksheet (x3).</strong> Counting within 10, children read how many shapes to trace round and colour in. <strong>7. Match shape to correct number of sides worksheet (x2) with Answers.</strong> This worksheet will help to consolidate children’s knowledge on the number of sides 2-D shapes have. There are 4 shapes on each worksheet. Children draw a line from a 2-D shape to the correct number of sides that shape has. <strong>8. 2-D Shape Quiz/Activity – 8 Questions + Answer Sheet.</strong> This is a quiz activity and the last task is to trace around four 2-D shapes and label them. <strong>9. My 2-D Shape Picture for children</strong> Children are given the opportunity to practise their shape knowledge and create 2-D pictures. I hope that this is helpful to you.<hr> The questions in these booklets are in the style of actual SATs questions and are designed to be printed as A4 or A5. KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). Angles in a quadrilateral

A complete lesson on the interior angle sum of a quadrilateral. Requires pupils to know the interior angle sum of a triangle, and also know the angle properties of different quadrilaterals. Activities included: Starter: A few simple questions checking pupils can find missing angles in triangles. Main: A nice animation showing a smiley moving around the perimeter of a quadrilateral, turning through the interior angles until it gets back to where it started. It completes a full turn and so demonstrates the rule. This is followed up by instructions for pupils to try the same on a quadrilateral that they draw. Instructions for pupils to use their quadrilateral to do the more common method of marking the corners, cutting them out and arranging them to form a full turn. This is also animated nicely. Three example-problem pairs where pupils find missing angles. Three worksheets, with a progression in difficulty, for pupils to work through. The first has standard ‘find the missing angle’ questions. The second asks pupils to find missing angles, but then identify the quadrilateral according to its angle properties. The third is on a similar theme, but slightly harder (eg having been told a shape is a kite, work out the remaining angles given two of the angles). A nice extension task, where pupils are given two angles each in three quadrilateral and work out what shapes they could possibly be. Plenary: A look at a proof of the rule, by splitting quadrilaterals into two triangles. A prompt to consider what the sum of interior angles of a pentagon might be.
